Whilst there are an ever increasing number of positive succession stories there are still so many examples where significant family businesses have not yet considered their plans beyond the current patriarch's or matriarch's. It is unfortunately more common that you think that surviving family members ingest some real complexity and stress (financial and emotional) arising from the incapacity and/or death of current family leadership. Comments made by Juan Banos in the attached article ring so true: - “He did everything himself; he managed all the relationships and projects", and - “With the diagnosis, we started to lose everything. On top of that, we had no systems in place and no succession plan.” When I read stories like this I often ask myself simple question - if the surviving family members were able to work through the challenges and ultimately build a successful business, how much better could it have been if they were engaged by the patriarch during their lifetime? #familybusiness #purpose #construction
