Why would you want to be employed when you have your own business Matt? Short answer Employment would give me security, stability, work-life balance and progression in an HR environment. Long answer Steering Clarity Walk through Covid and beyond supported a lot of people. It saved lives, reduced isolation, built friendships and was a beacon of hope for those that needed it most. It supported many but it took it's toll on myself so I am now ready for employment. I am ready to have financial security without the need to constantly market and sell. I am ready for stability within an HR environment to progress my career and develop my skillset. I am ready to make a difference for a single organisation to make an impact for the team and the business contributing my ideas, skills and creativity. Deciding to pursue employment wasn't an easy decision to make but I know it is the right one even if the hustle culture would say I am a quitter. Only thing I am quitting is not prioritising myself as best as I can. For any of my business owner friends or anyone stuck in something they aren't enjoying I would highly encourage you to do what is right for you too. We only have one life, make it a good one. #humanresources

It's important to scope the marketplace, talk to your recruitment consultant ( 👋) and think about it carefully. It's also important to consider how resigning may affect you emotionally. It's a little like the change curve. 😃Elation You've been thinking about it, and now, finally, it's done. It's 'out there'. 😟Guilt What about those you're leaving behind? How are they going to manage without you and without your replacement in situ for a period of time? That's your problem, right? Wrong. 😱Regret Suddenly, the grass doesn't seem greener on the other side - or worse still, you're filled with fear because you've resigned and don't have your next career lined up. 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱𝘀... I'm noticing a huge increase in Lincolnshire businesses putting people (who are not especially senior) on 6 months notice. It's not easy for companies to know what to do here. But longer notice periods can damage relations with an employee. 6 months is too long for anyone other than those in business critical or highly technical roles. As a very general guide, in Accountancy and Finance, I suggest the following: ⚫ Roles up to £40k - 1 month ⚫ Roles up to Exec level - 3 months ⚫ Exec roles - 6 to 12 months depending on the role If the level of the job doesn't warrant a long notice period, it can be perceived as an attempt to make it hard to leave. ⛔ No-one wants to wait 6 months for someone at that level. ⛔ Employees know that it might affect them looking for another job. They resent that. I have seen people leave a job that they were on the fence about because they didn't want to be tied in. ▶ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱? 🎇 Make sure your recruitment processes are efficient and effective, allowing you to replace quickly and start them asap after someone has resigned. 🎇 Conduct exit interviews or get external HR help to do it for you, giving you visibility about leaving reasons (this I can't help with, but I know incredible people who can) 🎇 Regular meetings (Quarterly, alongside an open door policy) with key members of staff, to anticipate problems, and ensure that people are developed in a way that makes them want to stay with you. The people cost in any business is significant 💸 💷 💰 Everyone wants to reduce their staff turnover as much as possible. 💡 But increasing notice periods can have the opposite of the desired effect. 🏃♀️

True story alert! One of my candidates shared a tough dilemma with me: they left their former employer for a new opportunity with a 20% pay bump, but they were miserable. The new job ended up requiring crazy long hours and weekends, and to top it off, their new manager ended up being terrible. ⏩Don't underestimate how big of a decision it is for someone to leave their job.⏪ I think any hiring manager or recruiters especially need to be reminded of this sometimes. Moving jobs is a massive deal, it's a crucial moment in someone's life. Always be respectful of that decision, don't pressure for an answer but show the enthusiasm in return by being super-transparent & proactive. Of course, it's a two-way street and you need guidelines and parameters for that person to feedback to you, you can't wait forever, so it's a balancing act. Post-Pandemic “job hopping”… Can we clear something up? Nobody saw the pandemic coming… or the post-pandemic hokie cokie that followed… and as a result, lots of great people in #talentacquisition had to respond the best way they could. If you are a #recruiter and you are judging anyone for doing the best they could during unpredictable and unprecedented times, by taking contracts, short term assignments or even temporarily moving out of the industry to pay the bills… You are in the wrong job… For the people who are being told that they have “job hopped” since 2020… you deserve better. Hear hear David J Brammer, nice insight, as per the usual, regarding 'job-hopping'. I saw a job post the other day, that actually said, 'recent/current experience required'! For 'hopping' substitute 'jumping'. I've written here before, that all too often and particularly in TA/recruitment, people don't 'jump', they tend to be 'pushed'. I know I have been. The irony is, that recruiters, of all people, should appreciate this aspect of 'career (dis)development' and be empathetic, but it appears this isn't always the case. It's also worth noting that unconscious bias is at play here too, since if you've never had a gap in your own career, it's easy to make this a criterion upon which you might base decisions. I've always felt that one learns more from adversity, but then I would say that wouldn't I.
