What a privilege this was! Thank you Minnesota Leadership Council on Aging, Adam Suomala, and all the #aging sector leaders who participated in this session! For those who were unable to attend, here were some of my key takeaways from the vibrant break-out and full group discussions: 🤝 #Representation matters. One nursing home staff member shared about how one day they were holding the hand of a resident and realized that she wasn't letting go. Her grip was tighter than usual. Eventually the staff member noticed, "We are the only two people here who look like we do". 💰 #Resources are constrained. Workforce shortages, lack of knowledge of or access to culturally-specific consultative or direct care services for nuanced situations make it challenging to provide person-centered care for all minority populations. 🖼 #Healthequity is advancing. #Minnesota policy makers have shifted from a mindset of tackling health disparities to promoting equitable approaches to promote better QoL outcomes. With this reframing came a focus on an organization's strengths (rather than deficiencies), empowering innovation and progress (though there is still so much to accomplish).
Special thanks to Andrew Savitz of SpirituWell for guiding today's Catalyst Conversation, exploring how Minnesota can better-serve culturally diverse populations. Together, we'll create an #agefriendlyMN If you missed it, you can WATCH NOW: https://lnkd.in/gyq5NPtn

1 in 5 Australians are of Asian heritage, yet we do not see enough Asian representation in the climate movement. Current climate spaces are unfortunately failing to support, empower or highlight Asian Australian leaders and their abilities to inspire, organise and mobilise their communities for climate action. Moreover, Asian Australians’ overall climate literacy is hindered by misinformation , limited access to accurate information , leading to passivity and deferential attitudes. Additionally, few climate organisations understand the complexities that Asian Australians experience surrounding differences in confidence to engage in public life. We have much to do. Please join us in our advocacy work to build an environment where Asian Australians are in the forefront of shaping climate solutions for Australia 🙏
On World Environment Day today, we ask that you join us in our advocacy efforts within our Asian Australian communities. Here is to creating a sustainable, equitable and prosperous future for all! Click here to join us! https://lnkd.in/gyRqKjMh

Intergenerational Trauma impacts our First Nations communities everyday. The Stolen Generation resulted in entire generations of Aboriginal people having their chance to parent and practice culture with their children taken away, their children having the chance to learn about parenting and culture taken away, and their children's children left with a legacy of trauma within a community that suffered that same trauma. This is why the very real impacts of intergenerational trauma are felt by First Nations People today and will be for generations. We must understand and acknowledge the impact of the Stolen Generations.
The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us of the necessity of a culturally aware and trauma-informed approach when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. With thanks to Telethon Kids Institute

…. how to engage with cullures of enquiry whereby we give ourselves, and each other, permission actively to participate in processes of democratisation that confront painful psychosocial realities communally. What can we (re-)learn from the rise and the fall of Henderson Hopsital Therapeutic Community …
Coalitions of activist communities - communities of activist coalition - the only way to push back against the multiple assaults upon the agora perpretrated by extractivist anti-communalist inhospitable in-groups bent upon polluting the rivers, cooping up the unhoused in prison hulks bringing the planet down in flame and flood about our heads...come discuss experiences in communities with the Henderson Heritage Group this October - free to anyone who can't afford to pay, and only a tenner for those who can... #democratictherapeuticcommunities #therapeuticcommunities #practicesofequality #activistresearch #survivorresearch #groupdynamics #psychosocial #communites #communitiesofpractice #coalition https://lnkd.in/e6yT72eg

What is the nature of being in communities? What range of experiences come under the under-examined heading of 'feelings of belonging or not belonging'? What structures and processes sustain and integrate community, and what factors tend towards the disintegration or collapse of community? What happens when cultures of enquiry are developed and renewed, and what happens when they atrophy, falter or fail? Come and join us in exploration of these experiences in communities in the temporary learning community of our annual public event.... #democratictherapeuticcommunities #therapeuticcommunities #practicesofequality #activistresearch #survivorresearch #groupdynamics #psychosocial #communites #communitiesofpractice #coalition
