On Tuesday night, Georgina Orchard and I hosted our first in-person business networking event in Sydney. Despite the weather being awful, we had 19 amazing business people and human beings (out of the 26 that registered) turn up. We did the event differently. We facilitated a number of fun exercises, designed to help everyone relax, have fun and connect at a human level first. Everyone who participated were amazing. They all played along, and in the end everyone said they had fun and enjoyed getting to know each other, without any in-your-face-pitch-slapping taking place. It was a small more intimidate event. This meant we were all able to hang around in the kitchen area, and enjoy connecting and chatting, whilst filling our bellies with some sandwiches, fruits and cupcakes too. We learned a lot from our first event, thanks to everyone being kind and willing to give us valuable feedback, which will help make our next event on Wednesday 12 June in Sydney CBD even better. 🤖 In the current climate where security breaches abound, have you ever wondered how this impacts AI? How can #AI, specifically large language models (#LLMs), be targeted? These are possible attacks 1️⃣ Text Perturbation Attacks 2️⃣ Semantic Attacks 3️⃣ Gradient-based Attacks 4️⃣ Backdoor Attacks 5️⃣ Query-based Attacks 6️⃣  Evasion Attacks 7️⃣ Trojan Attacks Since most LLMs are closed models, their primary attack surface resides with user input. An attacker will use different techniques to try to confuse the model into generating inappropriate outputs. Text Perturbation Attacks, Semantic Attacks, Query-based Attacks, and Evasion Attacks all involve techniques related to manipulating input prompts. ▶ TEXT PERTUBATION: Modifying a prompt in a subtle way so that it generates harmful or biased content. This example is not within the realm of LLMs but illustrates the process: I once worked for a startup where I received a phishing email of very high quality, asking me to press a button to update the OS. The email was exceptionally well-designed. How did I figure it out? The context (requesting an update via email) and a text perturbation in the URL: "MIcrosoft." The 'I' was swapped. You had to be a little eagle-eyed to spot it. As you can imagine, attackers will invest many hours in finding the right combination of changes that generates the outcome they desire. ▶ SEMANTIC: This type of attack focuses on manipulating the context of a prompt to induce the model to produce the desired output. The strength of LLMs lies in their ability to recognise context, enabling them to accurately classify requests and by extension, engage in conversations with humans. ▶ QUERY-BASED: Querying the model specifically to glean sensitive information about the training data from the output generated. ▶ EVASION: Obfuscating or masking inputs through the use of sophisticated language or blending truths with untruths. The other attack vectors relate to the modesl themselves or the training data. ❓ What are the potential outcomes if a model is breached? ❌ Service outages ❌ Leaking of user credentials ❌ Spreading of false information ❌ Privacy violations of sensitive data used for training ❌ Intellectual property theft through corporate espionage ❌ Producing biased output to influence public decision-making ❌ Regulatory fines for breach of GDPR, CCPR & other legislations ❌ Brand damage if you deploy the LLM, especially if customer-facing ❌ Manipulation of the LLM to create phishing or social engineering content As evident from these attacks, it is in our interest to continuously improve the capabilities of the models to enable them to self-detect such attacks. This inevitably leads us toward making these models smarter and more aligned with human intelligence. In a way, the models themselves form part of the answer.
