Building a Geological Framework for Integrated Subsurface Management allows for a better understanding of the surface and particularly the subsurface hidden beneath our feet. For the development of harmonised geological maps and models, the use of common data models, standards and vocabularies is essential to address pan-European and cross-border subsurface management challenges. Martin Peersmann shares the words of Drs. T. Klip-Martin, Ambassador of the subsurface and member of the Dutch Senate, "Soil and the subsurface form the foundation of our existence. The future use requires: a good balance between exploiting and protecting, through the implementation of sustainable land and resource management practices”. Defining a Geological Framework for Subsurface Management is crucial for informing decision-making and shaping policies. Last week I had privilege to share my experiences on how geology can play critical role in De-Risking CCS at SEG Asia Pacific Symposium. The symposium was a great initiative by SEG to bring together industry and academic experts for engaging discussions on how CCS implementation can be prioritized within Asia. Key focus of the symposium was mainly around how multidisciplinary geoscience techniques can be used for CCS projects. Several recent developments on MMV of CCS Projects were highlighted with new insights.  #CCS #SEG #MMV #SLB #energytransition

On Monday, I spoke at the UNECE Resource Management Week about the key role of the Geological Surveys of Europe as an expert community in UNFC, delivering future sustainability in raw materials supply for the Green Transition. On Tuesday, I spoke at the final meeting of the GREAT Project on the need for geological (subsurface) data integration into the Green Deal Data Space initiative to deliver net zero. Today, I spoke with the Working Group Groundwater on the role of the EuroGeoSurveys Water Resources Expert Group and the GSEU - Geological Service for Europe project work on developing pan-European harmonized datasets on groundwater quality and quantity, for European Water Resilience. And tomorrow, I’ll meet with the EuroGeoSurveys Task Force on Subsurface Integrated Spatial Planning to discuss the need for holistic, data-informed, integrated subsurface spatial planning, again to reach our net zero goals. It’s been a week that has highlighted the cross-cutting relevance of geology to society and sustainability. Geology is not just rocks. It’s not just mining.
