In my view, the ability to communicate effectively with others who are not experts in your own field is the most important skill a geoscientist needs. This is an excellent oppourtunity for geoscientists to take their communication skills - and careers - to the next level.
Due to popular demand and on the recommendation of Geoscientists Canada’s member regulators, GC has purchased a two-year licence extension to Geologize Ltd.'s Practical Geocommunication Course. This purchase will provide a further two years of FREE access (to Dec 31, 2025) to the PGO registrants, geoscientists-in-training and student members. To access the course for free, please contact PGO at info@pgo.ca.

Please help me share the good news that US-based members of AGI Member Societies will continue to be able to access #free training in #geoscience #communication into next year, thanks to generous support from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Endorsed globally by prestigious geoscience organizations, Geologize LTD’s Practical Geocommunication course not only enhances personal and professional development but also contributes nine hours towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate. Never has it been more vital to empower geoscientists with the skills needed to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to the public and key stakeholders. At a time of pressing global challenges - including mineral and water resources, climate, energy, and geohazards - helping our professionals communicate effectively is crucial. The renewed offer extends through February 15, 2025. At that point, existing enrollees will have an additional three months to complete the training. AGI has provided information to our Member Societies with instructions on how to access the training. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/epW6kyXv

🌍 Press release: Building on the Past, Advancing towards the Future: Geology in the Era of Technology We’re excited to announce that the 5th International Professional Geology Conference (IPGC) will take place from 5-7 November 2025 in Zaragoza, Spain! Organised by the Colegio Oficial de Geólogos, the Associação Portuguesa de Geólogos, and the European Federation of Geologists, the event will highlight the vital role geologists play in addressing urgent societal challenges such as climate change, sustainable energy, and resource management. The 5th IPGC aims to share strategies to bridge the skills gap and inspire the next generation of geologists. 🌱 Manuel Regueiro y González-Barros (ICOG), President of the 5th IPGC, emphasised that the conference’s theme, “Building on the Past, Advancing towards the Future: Geology in the Era of Technology,” perfectly reflects its main goals. The event is designed to delve into the evolving role of geology as a profession, rooted in its significant historical achievements while looking ahead to the future of the science, particularly within the technological era. EFG President David Govoni said, “Geologists are key to achieving global and European sustainability goals. The 5th IPGC is an essential opportunity for the profession to showcase our ability to lead solutions that address energy, resource, and climate challenges.” Luís Lopes, APG President, says that the 5th IPGC is an opportunity for geologists to show Society that they are united and that their skills are essential to respond to the enormous challenges that arise in achieving all the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. I was very proud to see Madhurima Bhattacharya from Veridian, one of our University of Manchester Petroleum Geoscience MSc students from a few years ago, that I remember well, on the opening panel for EAGE in Oslo. What a great discussion from this "relatively" young next generation of geoscientists, that are driving our progression. So articulate in explaining the importance of energy security and access in developing world, the need for pragmatic approaches, to be aware of energy poverty in many developing countries and not too always look from the perspective of our very privileged position in UK and Europe. The whole panel was inspiring and hit the nail on the head. The need for industry to fund education, nothing comes free, and the need to develop sustainable careers pathways to attract the next into our industry. The positivity of that session and passion came through. We are in the era of geoscience, we just need to embrace it, and companies need to step up, educate and promote education of next generation in Europe, it is a miniscule percentage of their annual profits. We can deliver energy security, at affordable costs, the solutions are there, it may take a bit longer realistically that may environmentalist want, but we can deliver. The future is ours. The future is Geoscience!

Geoscience is an interdisciplinary field and how it is practiced from one area to another can vary greatly. Professional geoscientists are fortunate to have their pick of professional associations, learned societies and technical organizations. From regional groups like the CIM Porcupine Branch to niche national groups like Canadian Well Logging Society (the oldest organization devoted to log analysis!), there is something for everyone. I deeply appreciate the Geological Society of Nigeria (#GSN) in collaboration with Geological Society of America (#GSA), for arranging the online webinar titled "International Opportunities and Career Pathways in Geosciences." The knowledge gained was invaluable, and I eagerly anticipate similar programs in the future. My horizon of acknowledging the prospect of geoscience to myself and the world has been enriched. thanks to the panelist Aminu Abdullahi Isyaku, Ph.D, FGS, GProf. Makoji Aduku Chioma Onwumelu, Ph.D. for doing justice to the topic. #GeoscienceWebinar #CareerPathways #ThankYou #Geosciences

These opportunities are focused on recruiting social and behavioral scientists into the USGS, with interests in natural hazards and risk. One opportunity is focused on research to develop multi-hazard communication tools and products and the other one is one disaster losses:23-22. Social and behavioral research on multi-hazard products developed by the USGS | U.S. Geological Survey 23-27. Understanding disaster loss for a Hazard Ready Nation | U.S. Geological Survey (usgs.gov) What is a Mendenhall Fellowship? It is a special two-year post-doctoral research fellowship within the U.S. Geological Survey. Who is a good fit for a Mendenhall? People who are either almost done with their dissertation OR someone who is, at maximum, five years post PhD when they apply for the role. While a PhD is not required to apply, a PhD must be completed before a new Mendenhall Fellow can start work at a USGS office. How do I apply? The Mendenhall application requires a research proposal to be written. It is highly recommend reaching out to advisors early to start talking about it; they can help you shape your proposal (but not write).
