Attention #geotechnicalengineers, #bridgeengineers and #marineengineers: #Ship impacts can apply massive loads on #bridge piers. In this example, I took a typical 100k vessel impact load, applied 30 ft above the cap initially, and progressively increased the load to 20000 k, which is likely close but perhaps smaller than the load that the Francis Scott bridge experienced. This is an imaginary bridge pier with 12 - 90 inch diameter piles. At the 100k typical #ASCE7-22 impact load the pier displaces about 0.5 inches. At 20000k the displacements increase to 29 inches and the piles fail structurally. The analysis was performed with our #DeepFND #deepfoundation software and included water flow loads. A common mistake on some sites is using one design for almost every blast, neglecting the fact that geological and geotechnical parameters can vary even within the same site. This oversight can lead to undesired outcomes. For example, consider a blast where there is a fault perpendicular to the free face of the bench. In this case, aligning the blast with the "main" free face could cause some of the blast energy to travel back along the fault, leading to significant damage of the back. Driving pile foundations through subsurface obstructions, such as debris, presents challenges that can lead to issues like pile damage, misalignment, and reduced load-bearing capacity. To mitigate these challenges, a combination of effective strategies is necessary. Key approaches include conducting thorough geotechnical surveys to identify obstructions, removing debris during pre-construction site preparation, and selecting appropriate pile types, such as steel or micro-piles. Adjusting pile driving methods—like using impact hammers with variable energy control, vibratory techniques, and jetting—can also help navigate difficult conditions. Implementing real-time monitoring allows for immediate responses to encountered obstructions, while pre-drilling pilot holes and using temporary casings can further ease the driving process. In cases of extensive debris, alternative foundation systems like drilled shafts or caissons may be more effective. Employing rock-socketing or augering techniques and adjusting pile layout when necessary ensures structural integrity. Overall, these combined strategies enable project teams to address subsurface obstructions successfully, ensuring the foundation system's integrity and load-bearing capacity through proper planning and adaptability.
