Blink and you'll miss it
For this year's slope stability monitoring and management article, we look at some highlights from the Slope Stability 2024 conference in #Brazil plus as usual review some new approaches and techniques. Two of the stand-out presentations from the
symposium, held 14-19 April in #MinasGerais, looked at new approaches to slope stability monitoring – firstly a paper titled “Developing a ‘Mapping-Monitoring-Modeling' #DigitalTwin for #slopestability hazard response optimisation” from IDS GeoRadar, its parent company Hexagon Mining, customer Barrick Pueblo Viejo and specialist geotechnical engineering company Gecko Geotechnics. Another presentation from the event was also led by IDS GeoRadar and Hexagon Mining, this time with iron ore mining customer Vale, and was titled “Long term deformation analysis of vegetated slopes with #GBSAR.” Instead of hard rock open pit mining it focuses on #tailingsdam monitoring, a critical activity that is becoming more and more important. Orica-owned GroundProbe’s Geotechnical Support Services (GSS) unit is a world-class global support network that assists mining customers with effective slope stability and underground #riskmanagement through comprehensive technical support. We caught up with Ben Moke, Chief Commercial Officer and VP Americas including on its recently expanded remote monitoring centre in #BeloHorizonte. One critical area of concern is the frequent practice of dumping near the edges of stockpiles and spoil piles. Dynamic berms, which are essential safety barriers, must be meticulously maintained at specific heights to mitigate these risks. The #BermMonitoring System (BMS) is a technological solution for this from #SouthAfrica’s Reutech Mining. High demand for slope stability assessments recently led consulting company Groundwork, part of SLR to pivot towards acquiring a Maptek™ LR3 #laserscanner for in-house monitoring services. Coming back to the #SlopeStability conference, another paper titled “Using coupled #discretefracture network and limit equilibrium analysis to improve #slopedesign reliability” was presented by consultancy WSP in Canada along with customer Rio Tinto Kennecott, the world-leading #copper mining operation in Utah. Lastly, developers at UK #IoT monitoring specialist Senceive have launched two products that extend the capability of #wireless #remotemonitoring in various mining applications. Firstly, the introduction of a satcomms capability means that the powerful technology can be deployed at the world’s most remote mine sites. In a further development, the team at #Senceive say they are delighted with the effectiveness of their new Digital Interface Node, which allows a diverse range of geotechnical, environmental and structural instruments to be integrated with existing wireless communications platforms.
