Happy National Surveyors Week! 🧭 This week, we celebrate the contributions of our surveyors, whose dedication and hard work chart our path forward. Our first team member recognized is Troy Shriver. Troy's first job out of university was a testing and mapping water quality of jurisdictional waters in Greenville, SC. He quickly realized that he enjoyed mapping more than the environmental work and decided to pursue surveying/geomatics as a career. After years of field and office experience, he was motivated to pursue his profession licensure after learning that the majority of licensed surveyors were within five years of retirement, thus leaving a huge opportunity for the younger generation of surveyors to grow within the field. Troy says surveying is unique because it’s an old practice with a lot of history. As long as humanity has had the concept of private property, surveyors have been working in some capacity to delineate and interpret boundaries between those properties. It is not uncommon to find plats and deeds of record in North Carolina that date to the 1800’s. It gives the surveyor a unique opportunity to think about the historical context of the original survey in light of the ever-increasing technological changes for measuring and delineating those properties with increasing accuracy. His advice to someone looking to become a surveyor or join the surveying profession is don’t be afraid to dive in without experience. Getting in the field and learning procedures and processes will give you a really good idea if surveying if the career path for you. #NationalSurveyorsWeek2024 #NSW2024

Land surveyors play a pivotal role in shaping our built environment. They are responsible for mapping and measuring land, ensuring accurate property boundaries, and providing crucial data for construction, real estate development, and infrastructure projects. Their work is instrumental in urban planning and environmental protection, making it a career of significant importance. However, the profession faces a significant challenge: fewer licensed surveyors. Many experienced professionals are retiring, and fewer young people are entering the field. This shortage could lead to delays in construction projects, legal disputes over property boundaries, and a general slowdown in development. For those with a passion for technology, the outdoors, and problem-solving, a career in land surveying could be a perfect fit. The demand for this field is ever-present, and their work often leads to creating not just lifetime memories but also stories that can be shared with others, making it a career that is both rewarding and inspiring. #getkidsintosurvey #gkiswest #landsurveyors #information #career #graphic

Surveyors UK, Because Surveying Matters. Connecting surveying industry through unbiased collaboration & partnerships. Great British Entrepreneur Awards Finalist | Student Surveyor Group Founder | Entrepreneur | 💜 AI
A built environment GCSE would be an excellent step forward in attracting new talent. However, this will take some time to implement. I think including surveying elements in the Geography curriculum would be a good start as well. Not all surveying is in the built environment! RICS #learning #surveyors #surveying Surveyors UK

This is one of the most accurate descriptions I have ever read about surveying. It is quite the conundrum.
Land surveying is a unique combination of white-collar professionalism and working-class manual labor. We must be effective communicators, understanding handwritten legal language from centuries past and applying it to our land with advanced, modern-day technology. From the woods to the city, the computer desk to the courtroom, Surveyors analyze cadastral boundaries and real earth features. It’s more than a career, it’s a lifestyle, and I love it! This week we celebrate and honor our local Geospatial Professionals with National Surveyors Week! #lovemyjob #gscmaine
