The Unicorn Cave artifact with ~51 Ka is far from the oldest possible example of pre "art". Archeologist have focused on early symbols — objects intended to depict something, like a bear drawn on a wall, and objects in which the symbolism is unclear, like the carved bone from the Unicorn Cave, and have avoided defining the term "art". Dirk Leder prefers to use the term "pre-art," which others use to describe very early forms of artistic expression made by Neanderthals and possibly by Homo sapiens; they include ~75 Ka cave drawings in France, a ~64 Ka cave paintings in Spain, and ~58 Ka engravings on a cave wall in France that are the earliest "unambiguous" evidence of abstract designs by Neanderthals. #Unicorncave #Neanderthal #homoSapiens #rockart #preart #DirkLeder #archeology #abstractdesign #symbolism
