Badly designed equipment can have fatal consequences. For example, a badly designed interface in prescribing software could lead to wrong – even deadly – doses of medication being administered. On the other hand, good design can make healthcare services easier to use, improve their safety and efficiency, and create a more positive experience for both patients and staff. Design has contributed to many great achievements in healthcare, from better drug labelling systems to point-of-care digital health records for community health workers, new models in prescription drug delivery, or better newborn phototherapy devices. Yet, even though there has been plenty of evidence about the positive impact of design expertise in healthcare, it’s not often discussed in medical literature. In this paper, we consider design as a quality improvement strategy, and suggest that with its focus on creativity and user-centredness, design is a must-have skill for safety critical industries which can help to transform our healthcare systems. We argue that there should be more engagement between designers, health service users, and improvement professionals, and explain how it could lead to safer, more efficient and more inclusive healthcare. Visit the Knowledge Repository: https://lnkd.in/dSdanFX A little over 10 years ago, The Center, with the support of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH), American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) and Facility Guidelines Institute, launched the Knowledge Repository. The concept was to share a trove of citations with other research pioneers and early evidence-based design practitioners by creating an open-access, searchable database, and continue to add to it over time. To help improve understanding and use of research and papers, Key Point Summaries were created to summarize key concepts, objectives, methods, findings, limitations and design implications. These help make the Knowledge Repository an invaluable tool – and probably The Center’s greatest resource – for those new to healthcare design and experienced practitioners alike. As of today, our Knowledge Repository has officially surpassed 1,000 Key Point Summaries! Need to learn more about an unfamiliar design topic? Looking for the latest research to inform a current design project? Check out the Knowledge Repository today.

How To Achieve Lasting Stability while Cutting Costs at Your Hospital? Cost control + long-term stability = success of your clinic. However, with challenging budget allocations and rising customer demands, it is getting harder to stay ahead of the competition in healthcare. Working with medical companies, I noticed several trends that impact their ability to optimize expenses and keep up with the market. I turned those trends into actionable strategies that you can use to make your medical business more efficient. 📌 Enhance staffing efforts You can trim overhead labor costs without compromising care by refining workforce management (through smarter scheduling, role optimization, and staff training). 📌 Stop ignoring tech Telehealth and automation tools can help optimize operations, reduce in-person visits, and reduce administrative work while upgrading legacy systems can lead to significant savings. 📌 Improve supply chain management Your supply chain holds great potential for cost reduction. Improve procurement processes, negotiate better contracts, and manage inventory more effectively (with inventory management software) to cut expenses. 📌 Optimize energy efficiency Sustainability is a win-win for your budget and the environment. Invest in energy-efficient systems like HVAC to reduce operational costs and achieve long-term savings. 📌 Opt for value-based care Switch from how many patients you treat to how well you do this. Focus on preventive care and minimize unnecessary treatments to improve patient outcomes and cut operational costs. While all these strategies can bring sustainable improvements, some work better for short-term goals, while others are better saved for long-term purposes. ➡ For immediate results, focus on optimizing staffing and energy efficiency. ➡ For sustained success, invest in technology upgrades and a value-based care model.
