👉 Why Lyophilize? Or: Why Are More 'Ready to Use and Administer' Liquid Products Needed? ⏩Please provide more ready-to-use and ready-to-administer sterile products⏪- quote from a User and Clinical Pharmacist as per the Council of Europe Resolutions. Well, many people still believe that #biologics such as antibodies often require #lyophilization (freeze-drying) to provide long-term stability. While lyophilization does often provide longer shelf life, it is not necessarily state-of-the-art for many standard biologics anymore. Why? 🟣Because... 1️⃣ Lyophilisates require an additional unit operation (freeze-drying), adding to the product cost-of-goods (COGS) and being an additional unit operation with risk for yield. 💸 2️⃣ Lyophilisates require manipulation by the user (healthcare professional or possibly even the patient) to reconstitute (adding diluent to dissolve all dried solid), to withdraw solution, change needles, and administer (inject). 🫱🫲 With all these handling steps, the risk of mistakes or errors is significant, 🙁ranging from underdosing, overdosing, product contamination like generation of (e.g., rubber) particulates, non-aseptic handling, etc. 🌟At the same time, biologics such as antibodies are well stabilized in liquid formulations for multi-year storage... if the formulation development is done well.
