EMS Educators: the graph below is the progress of a student over the course of Capstone Internship with a single preceptor. The red line is the student self-rating which is completed prior to submitting the same eval to the preceptor for feedback (blue line). What do you think is the explanation for what we see happening here? In general, as the student grows (and better understands what the preceptor wants), the lines should converge. What are the differentials? Academic issue? Couple of bad calls? Personal issue? Personnel inter-personal issue? We can turn off any of the line items and replot the graph—which would you turn off to assess what might be happening?

Higher Education Executive Leader | Transforming lives through Higher Education | Lifting student and staff voices while fostering welcoming and inclusive campus communities
I am so happy to meet with our students — whether it’s 2 or 12 or 20:— to learn about their Cougar Experience, what we do well, and areas we could do better. Today we spent quite a bit of time on internships. #GoCoogs #studentaffairs #studentsuccess #highereducation #studentvoice
Dr. Daniel Maxwell, our Associate VC/VP of Student Affairs, hosted “Donuts with Dr. Dan” session with his fellow colleagues Dr. Monica Thompson, Executive Director of University Career Services and Dr. Anne Dayton, Director of the Cougar Initiative to Engage (CITE). The students shared their perspectives about internship opportunities and their cougar experience. The conversation was insightful, affirming, and filled with helpful feedback on the students experiences at UH. Thanks for coming out to chat, Coogs! 🌟 Thrilled to share my experience as a DOE Scholar supporting the Justice40 initiative! 🌟 As a rising junior double majoring in economics and mathematics at the University of Maryland, College Park, this summer has been incredibly rewarding. I have been working on creating a relational database of Justice40 data by integrating multiple datasets into an database, focused on ensuring that 40% of climate investment benefits reach disadvantaged communities. In addition to this, I've reached out to utility companies and public service commissions across the nation to gather data on utility shutoffs and arrearage information. This effort aligns with the EIA-EJE partnership to explore utility shutoff payback clauses. With many states having halted shutoffs during COVID-19, customers are now facing large bills. Our goal is to find data that shows the impact of these moratoria on disadvantaged communities. We’re exploring state energy offices, federal agencies, and university studies to understand this issue better. I’ve also been utilizing Microsoft Office to design and analyze documentation, presentations, and visualizations to support our reports. This internship has provided me with valuable skills in data analysis, statistical reasoning, database management, and technical communication. Weekly progress reports, mentor collaboration, and group meetings have been vital in developing my expertise in these areas. In addition, I've had the pleasure of meeting wonderful professionals and scholars who have offered invaluable advice on graduate school, career paths, and beyond. Their guidance has been instrumental in shaping my academic and professional goals. A huge thank you to my mentors Alvin Bates, PMP, Dr. Anjuli Jain Figueroa, and the fantastic team at EJE for their support and guidance. I also would like to thank and acknowledge the UMD Fellows Program for connecting me with this opportunity and helping me build the skills needed for this role! #Justice40 #DOE #Internship #DataAnalysis #DatabaseManagement #Equity #UMD #Economics #Statistics #TechnicalCommunication #Mentorship

Several innovative research initiatives focus on establishing a university education system that empowers talented individuals unable to afford tuition. These studies explore methods to integrate work opportunities within the campus, enabling financially disadvantaged but brilliant minds to offset education costs. Researchers investigate models incorporating part-time employment, internships, or skill-based programs, creating a symbiotic relationship between learning and earning. By identifying sustainable avenues for students to contribute to campus functions, these studies aim to address financial barriers, ensuring that the brightest minds are not sidelined due to economic constraints, fostering a more inclusive and accessible higher education landscape
