Geneva Science Diplomacy Week 2024 took place 10 - 14 June, an immersive program for science and diplomacy leaders held in Geneva, initiated and facilitated by GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator. The fourth day was held at CERN, where the 30 participants had the opportunity to visit the SM18 test facility and explore the work happening at the laboratory. Alongside learning how CERN is serving as a bridge between science and diplomacy, the day involved an interactive role playing game on quantum diplomacy. The game focuses on a scenario set in 2023, where large-scale quantum computing has already been achieved and holds the potential of reducing global greenhouse emissions. However, one nation has a monopoly on the technology and enforces strict export controls on quantum-related goods and services, escalating the crisis to the UN. The game’s debrief was run by Tim Smith and Marianne T. Schoerling (PhD), providing key insight into the work being done at OQI to emphasise the importance of developing educational tools to enable everyone around the world to contribute to the development of quantum computing and explore its application to tackle global challenges. A panel dialogue with next-generation science diplomats was convened in Reykjavik, Iceland, on 20 October 2023 at the Arctic Circle Assembly 2023 and can be view on the Science Diplomacy Center™ YouTube Channel (https://lnkd.in/ezS8fBdi). The goal of the ‘Arctic Science Diplomacy – The Next Generation’ session was to inspire next-generation science diplomats, helping to build common interests among allies and adversaries alike in the Arctic with global leadership across the 21st century. Four young leaders and two elders considered three questions: How can Arctic science diplomats facilitate dialogues between different stakeholders inclusively under current circumstances to build common interests? How can Arctic science diplomats implement the binding Agreement on Enhancing International Arctic Scientific Cooperation with continuity and inclusion? How can Arctic science diplomats develop the 5th International Polar Year (IPY) in 2032- 2033 to facilitate inclusive international dialogues involving superpower adversaries in the same manner as the 3rd IPY in 1957-58 (renamed the International Geophysical Year)? The panelists observed that both formal and informal dialogues are challenged in the Arctic, noting science diplomacy now is integrated into geopolitical thinking, limiting pathways with circumpolar dialogue to balance national interests and common interests. While cooperation with Russia on institutional level is currently impossible, personal contacts with Russian scientists (scientist-to-scientist) are important to keep dialogue channels open. The next-generation leaders further observed that science diplomacy will have long-term consequences across the Arctic and globally, noting science (natural sciences, social sciences and Indigenous knowledge) enables circumpolar stewardship beyond the capacities of nations, especially in view of Earth’s climate. Integrating research into action with hope, this panel dialogue observed the International Geophysical Year in 1957-58 (i.e., 3rd IPY) offers a profound precedent for the 5th IPY in 2032-33 to revive as well as enhance international Arctic scientific cooperation across the coming decade with implications for the future of humanity.

https://lnkd.in/gEc-2KXa A little old , but, full of nuggets ! 👇 " Science diplomacy', meaning international cooperation with science at its core, is the key to overcoming COVID-19. • Science paired with diplomacy can bring about unprecedented global change, as shown by the recovery of the ozone layer. • Building bridges between science and policy, and between countries, will help us solve the problems of today and tomorrow. In 1987, an improbable collaboration between scientists and diplomats led to a global ban on chemicals that were damaging our planet’s protective ozone layer. Harmful radiation was passing through the growing hole in this ozone shield, threatening life on the planet. In response, countries around the world agreed on the groundbreaking Montreal Protocol, which ended the use of ozone-depleting substances in cars, fridges and air conditioners. By 2018, the ozone layer was on track to recover completely, making this one of the most successful diplomatic agreements in history. Decades later, humanity is facing another common threat: the COVID-19 pandemic. But this time, cooperation between governments and international institutions is at an all-time low. Many countries are responding to the pandemic with sweeping unilateral actions and belligerent, threatening language. But to overcome this crisis, we need international collaboration, strong relationships and effective diplomacy. To see how powerful such global ties can be, governments need only look to scientists. Scientists have long formed relationships with colleagues across the globe, even when their governments didn’t get along. Countries are increasingly recognising the diplomatic value of such cross-border scientific projects and networks, known as “science diplomacy”. These international networks can re-establish trust and diffuse tensions when political relations are strained. After World War II devastated Europe, the European Nuclear Research Laboratory (CERN) encouraged post-war contact between German and Israeli physicists. During the Cold War, space cooperation enabled symbolic relationships between American and Soviet astronauts in orbit that were not possible on Earth. The 1959 Antarctic Treaty, a milestone for environmental protection, dedicated the last unexplored continent to science and peace. In 2015, long-standing cooperation between U.S and Cuban scientists paved the way for re-opening diplomatic channels between the two countries after nearly six decades of political strain. Today, the SESAME particle accelerator in Jordan is bringing together countries in the Middle East. These projects show the power of science diplomacy. Scientists have worked across political barriers, and ultimately, helped overcome them. As the new coronavirus spreads, such efforts are more vital than ever. " 👇 #puresciencepurifies #ershadspeak
