Clozapine all-at-night worked just as well as twice-a-day, even in high doses, in this retrospective study of #schizophrenia: https://lnkd.in/ef_YxevP In line with an earlier RCT of quetiapine. Dosing all at once improves adherence, reduces sedation, but can worsen side effects like orthostasis. High-Potency Cannabis and Increased Psychosis Risk Over the past few decades, cannabis has become much more potent. In the 1960s and 1970s, cannabis typically contained around 1-3% THC, the psychoactive compound. Today, some strains contain THC levels as high as 20-30% or more. This increase in potency has been linked to a higher risk of psychosis, especially in adolescents and young adults. Historical vs. Current Risk A study in The Lancet Psychiatry found that daily users of high-potency cannabis were five times more likely to develop psychosis than non-users. In the 1980s, the relative risk was lower because the THC content was much lower. Age and Risk Adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable to the effects of high-potency cannabis. The teenage brain is still developing, and high levels of THC can disrupt this process. Regular cannabis use during adolescence can double the risk of developing psychosis, and this risk increases with higher potency and more frequent use. What does Psychosis look like? Psychosis from cannabis use can present with hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and disorganized thinking. These symptoms can be temporary, resolving when cannabis use stops, or they can persist, possibly evolving into schizophrenia. Cannabis-induced psychosis can be temporary, but for some, it can trigger a predisposition to schizophrenia, leading to a more permanent problems. Recommendations for Parents and Health Care Providers Many adolescents encounter cannabis through friends, use it to fit in, or seek different experiences. The normalization of cannabis, lack of awareness about its risks, poor supervision, and parental use can contribute to the problem. Here are practical steps to take: 1. Educate teenagers (or younger) about the increased potency of modern cannabis and its mental health risks, including psychosis. Use real-life examples to highlight the dangers. 2. Routinely ask adolescents about cannabis use during medical and counseling appointments, and discuss the potential risks openly. 3. Look for signs of cannabis use, especially if there are mental health issues or a family history of psychiatric disorders. Intervene early with honest conversations and professional help if needed. 4. Offer resources to help adolescents develop healthy coping mechanisms and engage in alternative activities like sports or arts. 5. Support policies that limit cannabis availability to minors and back research on its effects to inform public health strategies and educational campaigns.

If Starbucks increased the caffeine content of its beverages by 8 to 15 times, many more people would end up in the emergency room. Caffeine is not a controlled substance, so aggression, paranoia, and psychosis rates increase with an unregulated increase in THC content, making it more accessible(either by legalization or by making it more socially acceptable/accessible); it is not surprising that we have 2 to 6 times rates of psychosis. #highpotencyTHC "Poison and medicine are often the same compounds given with different intent and at different DOSES." The mother nature did not make marijuna plant packed with 15 to 30 times more concentratrated THC, this is worth reminding the patients who believe in "natural", and truth is marijuna is an industry that is heavily marketed with overpromising to treat many psychiatric disorders(e.g. anxiety, insomnia and PTSD), however they are counting on their custmers being psychologically dependent on it. Many things in nature are not meant for human consumption, some can be dangerous. For an easier to understand analogy, cocaine is produced by the same plant that also gives us cocoa, but concentration of active stimulant like ingredients in cocoa maybe hundreds of fold lower than in cocaine.
