Graham Young thank you for THIS BIG SHARE! 190 years SINCE A COLONIAL POWER STARTED TO ABOLISH SLAVERY! I watched the news with dismay last night as #African #Countries are / have been #embracing new untried / untested #ColonialPowers. The #Russian #Orthodox #Church for example (new Scam Artists); untried / untested armies recruited from Russian Jails. So Sub-Saharan Africa WANT TO PUNNISH COUNTRIES THAT WERE SLAVE TRADING; BUT THEN STOPPED IT for Countries who I know (and our family has First Hand Experience) are extremely corrupt! My late father-in-law met Mr Putin then Lord Mayor of St. Petersburg and or Russian Law Firms to "business" Post Perestroika. He did this as a favour for a US Law Firm. He had a passion for Russian Art / The Arts. His findings were that it was so corrupt that he could not support or suggest they did business together! Now what would have changed in 30 years? In fact it has probably got worse. My message to African Churches pushing out the Catholic Church and Companies with far far more stable balanced Company Head Offices where THEY DO HAVE THE RULE OF LAW: yes they have had their problems; but be careful what you wish for. As for getting Russian (other) Protection; be careful what you wish for. Those Colonial Powers have changed significantly. A major major irony: Slavery was abolished by UK in 1833. The United States of America's Civil War (1863 - 65) WAS about something that had already been outlawed by UK; which the silly Americans ARE STILL FIGHTING ABOUT 158.0 years later in which they slaughtered 1.0 million of their own kind DOES NOT SEEM TO LET UP! They are still at each other; not militarily but aided and abetted by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation; Creating News to Sell Advertising!
August 1 is the anniversary of the promulgation of the Abolition of Slavery Act in the British Empire. This is the single biggest step forward for human rights in human history. It led to the outlawing of slavery everywhere. I'll be celebrating at breakfast: https://lnkd.in/gPv6zXNz https://lnkd.in/g_KyTDHt

August 1st is Emancipation Day in Canada, the anniversary of the end of slavery in the British Empire. Canada's history of slavery is often hidden behind more appealing stories like the Underground Railroad, but it's important to recognize that slavery was enforced in what is now Canada - thousands of people were bought and sold as property - for a longer duration than the main peak of the Underground Railroad. The country we live in today was shaped by slavery, and the long and continuing legacy of anti-Black racism that remained after abolition. To achieve #SDG10 and reduce inequalities, we must work hard to understand our history and how we got here, even when it's uncomfortable and unflattering. Canadian Museum for Human Rights has an excellent article on the story of Black slavery in Canada that we recommend, you can find it here: https://lnkd.in/g8X7ZMvM. 📷: Ad for a child slave printed in the Montreal Gazette on May 16, 1793 retrieved from Library and Archives Canada.

National Freedom Day commemorates the emancipation from slavery. On this day in 1865, President Lincoln officially adopted the 13th Amendment, a pivotal moment that abolished slavery in the United States. This historic amendment underscores the principles of equality and freedom for all individuals, leaving an indelible mark on American history. It is essential to recognize the profound impact of this quest for freedom, justice, and equality not only in the United States but also on Canada. The Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses, played a crucial role in the escape of enslaved individuals to freedom, with some finding sanctuary in Canada. This shared history highlights the interconnected struggle for human rights and freedom on both sides of the border. In the spirit of our collective journey towards justice and equality, National Freedom Day serves as a poignant reminder. Let's celebrate the richness of diversity that defines each of us, fostering unity in our differences as we work together for a more promising and harmonious future. Happy #Juneteenth! Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery and marks a crucial moment in the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Juneteenth also highlights the fundamental connection between emancipation and labor rights. While slavery legally ended, many newly freed individuals faced economic exploitation and continued to struggle for fair wages and decent working conditions. The labor movement has historically fought for these rights, aligning with the broader quest for economic justice and equality. Today's significance lies not only in its historical context as the end of slavery but also in its relevance to the continuing fight for equality, labor rights, and social justice.

In 1834, the British Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act, freeing over 800,000 people in Canada and the British Empire. Before this act was passed, slavery existed in Canada for over two hundred years. Bill M-36, which was first conceived by Rosemary Sadlier in 1995 and passed in 2021 recognizes Emancipation Day as a nationally observed day. It is a much needed call to reflect and remember Canada's history and how it has informed the systemic racism and structural inequalities that persist today. On this day and beyond, Urban Alliance on Race Relations re-affirms our commitment to the fight against anti-Black racism. We also celebrate the vibrant cultures, histories and contributions of Black communities across Canada. #emancipationday
