The fuse is the most basic element and protects against high current spikes but does not perform well against other conditions. Thermal protection using an overload relay monitors the temperature through the current passage and isolates the system if necessary. The calculations are extremely moderate and the estimations are only based on the change of the surface temperature. Here’s our latest FAQ… Q: How do I know if a motor is running hot? And what are the consequences? A: Firstly, measure the winding temperature. If it’s under the insulation class system rating of the windings, then the temperature is OK. If it’s at the limit or above, the insulation is likely to start to break down, risking electrical short circuits. Secondly, measure the bearing temperatures.
