It is estimated that 14.2 million people in the UK volunteered their support and services through a group, club or organisation in 2021/22 and approximately 1 in 5 people, that's nearly 16% of the population volunteer at least once a month (statistics from Volunteers Week). This 'formal' volunteering comes in many forms; through the Scouting and Girl Guide associations, PTAs, working in charity shops and organisations, to help run food banks, being a Citizen Advice trustee, being a listener or advisor on a help line and many more likewise incredibly value roles. And there are countless more volunteers who perhaps would not even consider the tasks that they perform as volunteering - those who regularly care for members of their community through kind deeds such as shopping, cooking, driving, or offering childcare to those who need support. To each and every volunteer, in whatever capacity we would like to say a huge THANK YOU for all that you do! This week is the 40th year of National Volunteers Week and, if volunteering is something that you've considered, it's the perfect time to sign yourself up! Not sure how to volunteer or what you could do? Here's a few ideas: 🔸 Many businesses actively promote their staff engagement with local volunteering - speak to your HR or management about their environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies to find out more. 🔸 Get on social media and ask! Local Facebook Groups can be a great forum for offering your support. You could find yourself helping to litter pick, mend and repair community areas, or run a tea stall for an event! 🔸 Become a STEM Ambassador! Contact STEM Learning UK to see how you can engage with groups. 🔸 Join the global Repair Cafe movement! Use your creative and handy skills to fix broken items for people in your community. It's a great way to breathe new life into items which could end up going into landfill. 🔸 Be a Bupa Coding Day volunteer! Help the teachers, support staff, and children at your local primary school as they go on an exciting Healthy Lunch-Bot Coding Adventure! To hear more about volunteering your services for our Bupa Coding Days please visit: https://lnkd.in/e9EAxp3n #VounteeringWeek #Volunteer #STEMVolunteering #Volunteering #BupaCodingDay #GWTP #STEMLearning #HealthyLunchBot #CodingAdventures

Volunteering Lead @ WCVA • Youth Volunteering Specialist • Youth Leadership • Network Lead • Trustee • Mentor and Coach @Felicitie_Walls
I love being in spaces discussing youth volunteering! Today I got to join a discussion where we reflected on what makes young people want to volunteer, what they find off-putting about volunteering and what they can tell us about their best volunteering experiences. What I'm hearing... 1. Young people want to have fun volunteering and feel appreciated 2. Young volunteers want to feel respected, supported, welcomed, included and empowered 3. Young volunteers want to have a variety of experiences, which allow them to learn, develop and aspire 4. Young volunteers want to be communicated with well, in a timely fashion and in a way that doesn't feel patronising 5. Young volunteers want to feel connected to their volunteering and to others around them 6. Young people are all different, we are all different and have different interests, abilities and motivations -treat us as such All of this is not a surprise - this is what we all want from volunteering... And there are a ton of resources out of there that can help those that involve young people, or that would like to, to think some of this through. If we make volunteering better for young people - we make it better for everyone! If you're looking for resources on how to involve young people, get in touch - I've got a long list. And if you've got a resource, add it below - lets continue to inform, inspire and enable volunteering to flourish. #volunteering #youthvolunteering #welcome #support #include #havefun #connect #learn #appreciate #individualdifferences #youngpeople #volunteer #getinvolved #flexible #accessible This image is from a report from StreetGames UK on creating a model for youth volunteering - its an old report, but some of these points were being made in the session today. Flexibility and accessibility are vital for engagement.

From a neighbourhood volunteer to a #socialwork student, Aaron Yau embodies the essence and values of dedicated volunteering: witnessing and supporting the growth of others. Five years ago, while still in high school, Aaron began his volunteering journey with Neighbourhood First and Youth S.P.O.T. Initially, he took on assisting roles, such as delivering supplies to the #elderly and tutoring children. Through these experiences, Aaron established connections with many elderly residents, regularly checking in with them to fulfil their essential needs. Additionally, he gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by #underprivileged families. Aaron realised that what might be an expensive meal for him could be a week's worth of food for others, highlighting the wealth disparity in society. This experience has reinforced his desire to make a difference in the lives of those in need. Guided and encouraged by mentors, Aaron gradually assumed more responsibilities, organising activities at the local Youth S.P.O.T. during occasions like Halloween and Christmas. It was through these interactions that Aaron transformed from someone with "little character" to a passionate #community servant. Aaron described the HKFYG as his second home where he gained a sense of belonging and invaluable life-long lessons. "I used to feel anxious about interacting with people outside my social circle. However, through various volunteering services, I have overcome my introverted nature and developed the ability to communicate and show care for others," Aaron shared. One of the reasons that Aaron chose to pursue a college degree in social work is because of his experience in the HKFYG, where he was inspired by the power of volunteerism. He recognises that while volunteers may not possess professional expertise, their genuine desire to help others is invaluable, regardless of monetary rewards. "That's the beauty of volunteering. You never know how your seemingly small and trivial words and actions during volunteering can provide critical help to someone in their time of need," Aaron emphasised. Join Aaron in his mission to create a positive impact. 🌟 Reflections on Volunteering: A Personal Journey 🌟 Volunteering is more than just giving back—it’s about building connections and contributing towards meaningful change. As a volunteer at M³@Chua Chu Kang and a former staff at People’s Association, I’ve had the privilege of being part of initiatives that empower and uplift the Malay/Muslim community. Each experience has only strengthened my belief in the power of community-driven efforts. Our community is rich with resilience and compassion, and through programmes focused on education, social support, and mentorship, I’ve witnessed how small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Whether it’s guiding youths or supporting families, our collective efforts ripple out, creating lasting positive change for everyone. One thing I truly appreciate is the sense of unity and purpose we foster. Every volunteer, organiser, and participant plays an important role, and together, we’re building a stronger, more connected community. For those thinking of volunteering, I encourage you to take that step. The impact may feel small initially, but the rewards are immense. It’s not about grand gestures—it’s about showing up, offering support, and believing in the potential of others. Together, we can continue building a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. 💪🏽💚 #Volunteering #CommunityEmpowerment #MalayMuslimCommunity #GivingBack #Mentorship #CommunityBuilding #Gratitude

Participation in volunteering is an excellent way for autistic people to contribute to the social and economic life of their community, to build their confidence and self-belief, and to thrive in life. Autistic people, through their diversity, can bring valuable and unique skills and experience to the volunteering sector. However, to make this experience positive, we need to firstly understand the barriers to volunteering that currently exist for autistic people and then work together to overcome these barriers. The benefits of a truly diverse volunteer organisation, that includes autistic volunteers, are immense for both the volunteer and the volunteer organisation. Empower Autism and Volunteering Queensland have developed practical tools, tips and information aimed at building the capacity of volunteer organisations to attract, engage, support and retain autistic volunteers. The guide takes you through three steps, each aiming to provide you with simple and practical tools to increase your organisations accessibility and engagement with the autistic community. If you are an organisation jump over to our website and take a look at these free resources to support your autistic volunteers to thrive within your organisation https://lnkd.in/e-YAtTU8 Volunteering Queensland #volunteering #volunteersrock

In the 2018 General Social Survey on Giving, Volunteering, and Participating, volunteers were asked about which factors were important drivers in their decision to volunteer for the organization they contributed the most hours. Factor: Family member volunteers = 39% Find more details and provincial breakdowns at the Canadian Knowledge Hub for Giving and Volunteering. https://lnkd.in/ehsDNz_v ✨ People are influenced by those close to them. If a family member is volunteering, it can inspire others in the family to get involved due to the positive example being set. ✨ Volunteering together provides a chance for family members to spend time together and strengthen their relationships while contributing to a meaningful cause. ✨ Knowing that a family member is already involved can make the experience less intimidating, especially for new volunteers. It provides a built-in support system and a sense of belonging. Some choose to volunteer because of family connections, but it's usually one of several motivations. Many volunteers are motivated by a genuine desire to make a positive impact in their communities or support causes they care about. Recognizing the importance of family connections in volunteering helps us create a more supportive, inclusive, and engaging environment, which can lead to stronger volunteer retention and a more vibrant volunteer community. ✨ We can create opportunities specifically designed for families, such as family volunteer days or projects that appeal to various age groups, enhancing the volunteer experience and making it more inclusive. ✨ We can leverage family connections as a recruitment strategy by encouraging current volunteers to invite their family members to join. This can be an effective way to expand the volunteer base. ✨ Families volunteering together are likely to be more committed and stay involved longer due to the social and emotional bonds that come from shared experiences. Food for thought! . . . #GivingAndVolunteering #CanadaCharity #CanadianKnowledgeHub #Volunteerism #LOVols #VolunteerManagement #VolunteerEngagement #StatsCanada #VolunteerCanada #VMPC #FoodForThought

The Power of Giving Back: Why Community Involvement Matters As professionals, we often get caught up in our daily routines, striving for personal success and career growth. But let’s pause for a moment and consider the immense impact we can create by giving back to our communities. Here’s why it matters: Broadening Perspectives: Volunteering your time enriches your life and familiarizes you with your community. By immersing yourself in local causes, you gain insights into how the world works. It’s an opportunity to grow as a person and understand your place in the larger tapestry of society. Essential Services: Without volunteers, many community services and events wouldn’t be readily available. Whether it’s helping at local shelters or food banks, your contribution directly benefits less fortunate neighbors. Giving back unites the community and bridges social, economic, and political gaps. Health Benefits: Did you know that regular volunteering is statistically linked to better physical and mental health? Those who volunteer tend to live longer and experience improved psychological well-being. The fulfilling feeling of contributing to society is unparalleled. Expanding Networks: When you volunteer, you meet new people—individuals who share your passion for positive change. These connections broaden your network of friends and help you better understand the circumstances of others. An open-minded perspective fosters effective citizenship. Skills Development: Volunteering isn’t just about giving; it’s about learning. Patience, kindness, and resilience are skills you’ll gain. Working alongside diverse teams hones your communication abilities. Plus, you might discover a new passion or interest along the way. Let’s commit to making a difference! Whether it’s mentoring students, participating in environmental initiatives, or supporting local charities, our collective efforts shape a brighter future. Remember, giving back is not just an act—it’s a mindset. #CommunityInvolvement #SocialImpact #Volunteerism #LinkedInPost

Do you have limited time, lack transportation, or have a physical disability that makes it difficult for you to volunteer in person? If so, virtual volunteering may be a great option for you. Many non-profit organizations are now utilizing the help of virtual volunteers, also known as “cyber-volunteers,” “digital volunteers,” or “e-volunteers.” These volunteers work remotely over the internet, using their computers, tablets, or phones to provide their skilled services to support a cause they are passionate about. In today’s busy society, where many of us have full-time jobs, families to care for, and little time for self-care, virtual volunteering makes it easier than ever to fit volunteer work into your schedule. Even if you have just a few hours to spare, you can make a difference and support a cause that is important to you. Consider virtual volunteering today and become a part of the growing movement of individuals who are making a difference in the world from the comfort of their own homes. #RKD #voluserve #Volunteers #Volunteering #Volunteerism #VolunteerService #VolunteerServe
