Do data architects exist anymore? I posed that question a few months back on Linkedin. Genuinely I was more interested in people’s perspectives on the role of data architects than their existence. Yet, this gave a few individuals a minor existential crisis and also spurred a lot of great discussions on the role of the data architect in 2024. For example here were just a few comments from directors of data architecture. Yes, we still exist, though things are a bit different now. No more celestial robes and pointy hats. We no longer keep sacred copies of Erwin or ER/Studio on hand for any modeling emergency 😁 Data modeling in the era of variant formats beyond dimensional and relational is more important than ever in telling stories and providing design guidance. The complexity of our choices and our systems requires someone who can distill the myriad of signals into a clarifying and unifying set of models people can collaborate and work on. - Jeff Nemecek Director of Architecture or In a small enough data organization, the same individuals or team can serve both architecture and engineering, even analytics. However, the skill sets are sufficiently different to warrant separate consideration.
