SEEN POSTED ON 06/10/2024 - No, I am not hiring! “Online English Teacher Part-time Weekends $12 per hour” A whopping $12 per hour to teach English. And we wonder what’s wrong with finding jobs today? THIS RIGHT HERE. Learning English is difficult, even for native speakers. We speak clichés, have confusing grammar rules, words that sound the same but are spelled differently (to, two, too), words spelled the same but one letter makes them sound different (rough, dough), and my goodness, I could continue listing reasons why people struggle with learning English. Imagine teaching English! It’s taken me more than three decades to fully master the English language! And that’s because I love languages, I love writing, reading, and teaching others what I know. I’m invested in the subject, whereas other people might not care. After all, not everyone is a word nerd! It’s taken a Bachelor degree in Communication and years of on-the-job experience training people, whether it be about writing or how to use computers, to reach the point where I could teach not only native speakers, but also foreigners new to our somewhat insane language. So - offering a job for $12 an hour to teach English was like a slap in the face. One could make more money working an entry-level job with no experience required making minimum wage. (I think, isn’t minimum wage $15 per hour? Even if minimum wage is only $10 per hour, does $2 more per hour make any sense to you?) As a writer, a lover of words, trainer, and child of two educators, this job posting made me not only sad, mad, and frustrated, but also disappointed with pay inequity. How old were you when you discovered what you wanted to do for a living? I was 19, and I had just gone back to Brazil after a year spent in Germany, when I realised I wanted to teach English and German as a Second Language I struggled to learn both languages, but a lot more to learn German because, let's face it, our exposure to the English language is a lot more extensive than German, right? 😄 I remember sitting around a dinner table or in school lots of times in Germany, not understanding a word, just nodding along 😆 I also remember which language teaching methods worked for me, and which ones didn't Excellent, mediocre and terrible teachers come to mind too 🙈 Teaching was my beloved profession for quite a few years in Brazil, and later on, recruiting, training, and coaching other language teachers brought me even more joy! 💛 It took me many years in England to discover how to transfer my existing skills into something I enjoy doing Many years working in housekeeping jobs, supermarket jobs, office jobs, bank jobs, education jobs (non-teaching), any job that simply paid the bills (some barely did!) Until I found #recruitment 🥰 Now, answer me, if it took me (and probably you too) so long to understand our talents and figure out what we want to do, how come schools expect 12-13-year-olds to do that when picking their subject options❓❗ My now 15-year-old regrets choosing Geography as an option and I can't say that he got on with Digital Media either He constantly worries that he doesn't know what he wants to do as a career I tell him not to be in such a hurry to grow up 🤔 Do you see this as an issue too?
