What makes our business really unique is our approach to sustainable forest management, and the use of clonal technology. The whole process begins in our clonal seedling nursery which produces 3,000,000 seedlings every year. Each individual seedling is a clone from one of the mother trees, which means we are able to grow the best quality seedlings, every time. Placed in climate-controlled environments and nurtured with valuable nutrients for growth, the plants are monitored in the nursery until they are ready to be planted in the forest. This stage of the process takes time and attention to detail; however it results in improved wood quality, faster growth, optimized density, uniformity and colour, and increased resistance to disease. Buying agricultural properties at a premium in Europe - Portugal has potential There is an emerging business in the national market. The acquisition of real estate for agricultural and forestry use is growing strongly around the world, at a time when investors are increasingly seeking to combine a competitive financial return with a positive social and environmental impact. It is Western Europe that has attracted the most investment in this segment, having raised 5.3 billion euros in 2023, triple the amount recorded in the previous year. And Portugal and Spain were among the countries that contributed most to this capture of capital in agricultural and forestry real estate, still having room for growth.

Delighted to share our full year results for the year ended 30 September 2023 yesterday. Highlights include the planting of approx. 950,000 trees across 4 afforestation schemes during the year taking us to six completed planting schemes since IPO with the value of these properties increasing by 85% versus acquisition costs, based on their carrying value of £18.9 million as at 30 September 2023.    These four planted afforestation schemes and strong carbon credit pricing growth over the period resulted in the value ascribed towards creation of carbon credits increasing to £2.7 million in total, representing an increase of 3.5 times over the year. Once the current afforestation schemes have been planted, the Company is targeting to have 1.0 – 1.2 million Pending Issuance Units validated by the Woodland Carbon Code in aggregate across the whole portfolio. During the year, the Company’s portfolio sequestered 35,081 tCO2e increasing the total to 63,954 tCO2e since IPO.   Richard Davidson, Chair of Foresight Sustainable Forestry Company Plc, commented:   “FSF’s two-year journey since IPO has been full of positive milestones and I am pleased that the Company ends the year in a position to deliver a nationally significant afforestation programme. Malaysia has a unique starting point with regards to Nature-Based Projects; close to 65% Malaysia’s emissions in 2019 was offset by Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) removals, as reported in the country’s BUR4 compared to most nations within the 5-15% range. Further, given that it has abundant natural forest cover (54%) consisting of inland forest, peat and mangrove, Malaysia’s forest ecosystem makes the retention of nature-based solutions (NbS) a key aspect of ensuring the country continues to achieve its. Nationally determined contributions (NDCs). We take this opportunity in Plenary 4: “Nature-Based Projects: The Opportunities & Challenges, and Lessons Learned” to speak to industry leaders to explore the reasons behind the importance of NbS projects for a country like Malaysia; the opportunities and associated with NbS implementation; strategies for building local competencies to scale; tackling human rights issues and allegations related to these projects; and effective ways to educate and dispel misconceptions on NbS projects. This decision, driven by extensive deliberations and administrative challenges, marks a pivotal moment for the #CO2credits industry, underscoring the fragility and complexity of managing large-scale offset projects. Kariba once heralded as a flagship initiative, has faced scrutiny and controversy, with allegations of misleading climate impact claims leading to CGI losing its contract with South Pole, a major carbon credit seller. The project's withdrawal from Verra highlights critical issues within the carbon-offset market, including the importance of transparent management and the need for robust standards and accountability. CGI’s challenges with Verra, including communication delays and access denial, reveal the operational difficulties that can undermine the credibility and effectiveness of offset projects. This situation raises broader questions about the reliability of carbon offsets as tools for combating climate change and the mechanisms in place to ensure their integrity. The withdrawal also jeopardizes one of the market's key insurance mechanisms—the buffer pool of surplus credits designed to cover events like forest fires. With CGI's exit, the process of replenishing this buffer remains uncertain, potentially destabilizing the market further. Verra’s response, emphasizing its commitment to environmental and social integrity, highlights the ongoing efforts to maintain credibility amidst these challenges. However, the Kariba project's hold since October and the stalled validation of Chirisa indicate systemic issues that need addressing. This development calls for a reassessment of how carbon offset projects are managed and regulated. It underscores the need for stronger oversight and more transparent engagement processes to restore confidence in the market and ensure that offset projects deliver their promised environmental benefits. https://lnkd.in/gs-Xz3NF
