👉 This year’s edition of the ARE Energy Access Investment Forum (EAIF), held in Lagos on 21-23 May 2024, saw major announcements from governments, renewable energy investors and developers. The EU announced new commitments of EUR 4 million for the upcoming GET.invest country window for renewable energy investment pipeline development ⚡ , and another EUR 20 million for a dedicated Nigerian investment facility for renewable energy and agri-business. In addition, the Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) to generate 500 MW of renewable energy 💡 to electrify rural communities across the nation, and presented the Nigeria Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) project which aims to provide new or improved electricity access to over 17.5 million Nigerians using DRE solutions. Moreover, ARE and partners announced the Partnership for Responsible Battery and Metal Recycling (ProBaMet) initiative, supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, focusing on lead-acid battery recycling from renewable energy projects. 🗣 Addressing the EU’s strong commitment to Nigeria, Massimo De Luca, Head of Cooperation, European Union Delegation to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ECOWAS said: “We are delighted to be co-hosting EAIF 2024 in Nigeria to bring even more attention to the great vibrancy of the investment climate for renewable energy in Nigeria. 🇲🇼 Violette Chanza-Santhe, BwB Senior Advisor, and member of BwB’s Global Expert Group, spoke at a workshop by the Renewable Energy Industries Association of Malawi (REIAMA), in conjunction with the Global Renewables Centre (GRC) earlier this week. The event focused on addressing challenges preventing the adoption of renewable energy systems in Malawi. Violette spoked about the state of renewables in Africa’s regions and current financing being directed towards renewable energy. She also discussed opportunities and examples for grants and capital market instruments being deployed to renewables and how these apply to the Malawian context.   The workshops were designed to facilitate knowledge sharing and capacity building among key stakeholders to increase energy access and attainment of SDG 7. These workshops were funded by the Scottish Government through the University of Strathclyde and are part of renewable energy knowledge exchange program being implemented in Malawi, Zambia, and Rwanda.   Violette Chanza-Santhe commented: “I was privileged to speak at the REIAMA conference. There is so much opportunity for deployment of renewable energy infrastructure here, in Malawi. But to achieve real scale, we’ll need thought as to how we bring the various parts of the financing architecture here together to create truly investable value propositions”. On 22 December, the IFC - International Finance Corporation signed a financing package for the Facility for Energy Inclusion (FEI) to boost access to clean and reliable energy across Africa. FEI, which is managed by Cygnum Capital, is a pan-African fund that supports small-scale decentralized renewable energy (DRE) projects, bringing power to Africa's commercial and industrial sectors and supporting broader economic activity. The team engaged us (the Renewable Energy Industries Association of Malawi (REIAMA)) on our perspectives on the gaps and opportunities that could be identified in the energy sector to support and improve the capacities of the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) through institutional capacity building and other regulatory frameworks. This conversation also touched on the topic of off grid solutions and mini grid viability in Malawi. The size of Africa's investment opportunity in renewable energy represents a potential US$193-billion by 2031. However, realising this potential will require access to innovative funding models and a robust secondary finance market to recycle and widen the available capital pool. This is according to new research from global consultancy firm Wood Mackenzie, commissioned by Revego Fund Managers and MOBILIST Global.
