I learned a few critical things about building a solid portfolio after graduating from Hack Reactor #bootcamp. I used to build a lot of projects for my portfolio, thinking they would help with my job search. Building projects are great ... but after a lot of 'no responses' 🫠 I began to ponder ... how exactly does it help with my job search? 🤔 𝗠𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲: 1️⃣ It's supposed to improve my experience 2️⃣ It's supposed to get me exposure from hiring teams 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀: I got a little bit of 1️⃣ and none of the 2️⃣. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀🥂 𝘄𝗮𝘀 … … building something that companies are willing to hire for 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲... Camlist is a Pet Adoption and Rehoming business. It is currently looking to hire a Software Quality Engineer (Senior / Junior). Building something (idea/process/app/prototype) that can ... identify and fix the root causes of app crashes during transactions for the benefit of pet owners and pet service providers ... would greatly help your case for this job 𝗠𝘆 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: By building something that focuses on these problems like these, I got both 1️⃣ and 2️⃣

There are always new shiny tech coming up but I have 5 solid concepts that puts a Senior Software Engineer at another level. Applying solid concepts regardless of the technology or whatever "stack" is being used is a valuable (and timeless) skill. Here they are:: - Find the gaps in documentation, fill those gaps - Look for steps that can be automated. There are several easy ones: linting or a simple build check will do well - Think about "when this fails how will I know?" and then apply monitoring. Anything to get started here is good - Logging and error messages are critical. If you are adding them, then make them awesome. "Failed to read file" is horrible. Think about what file? why did you failed to read it? invalid permissions? invalid path? what path? - Test. Test everything. Test what you can. Testing will make code better because smaller functions are easier to test than 200 line-long functions. Nobody likes 200 lines in a function, but almost everyone loves small functions Become more valuable in your work and your craftsmanship. When things start turning around, it will catch on to other engineers. Everything will be better. These are golden seeds that you can harvest for ever. - "Are you a senior?" is the stupidest question you can ask to a software engineer. Why? 1. Senior in one company might not mean Senior in another. 2. Many companies don't assign seniority levels at all. 3. Some really cool humble engineers won't tell you explicitly they are seniors. 4. Some mediocre engineers will tell you they are Seniors. You don't need experience to be a successful Software Engineer. Period. With 15+ years of experience, 20+ successful products, 5+ rating; I can vouch that "there's more to being a successful software engineer than just years of experience." And this may break your central belief that Experience Matters. But all we have been fed with is half truth or complete lie. And here are 3 things you need to focus to be a successful engineer: 1. Obsess over new learnings ➡️ The best way to learn is to build a network, work on open-source projects, explore about new frameworks and languages 2. Master the craft, not just code ➡️ Perceive code as art. Write code that’s maintainable, clean, and readable. 3. Include empathy in your skill stack ➡️ Approach problems from user might, different angles, experiment and then iterate. I call them “Engineer Traits” and hire engineers for Jalan Technologies that fit this list. Of course, experience is on the list too but a lot down on the priority list. For example, if you are a front-end developer, try to learn some back-end development, or vice versa. - Take more responsibility for the design and architecture of your applications. Learn how to create scalable, secure, and performant solutions that meet the requirements and expectations of your clients and users. Use best practices and tools to ensure the quality and delivery of your code, such as code reviews, testing, debugging, and deployment. - Become a leader and a mentor for other developers. Share your knowledge and expertise with your peers and juniors, and help them grow and improve their skills. These are some of the tips that have helped me grow as a software engineer. There’s a common misconception that if a software engineer knows a certain technology, they can solve any complex problem. But the truth is, technologies are just tools—they don’t make up the skill itself. What really matters is a software engineer’s ability to understand and break down complex problems, create smart solutions, and then pick the right tools to get the job done. The best software engineers stand out because of their problem-solving, critical thinking, and deep understanding of the basics. Sure, knowing how to use a tool is important, but it’s the experience, creativity, and problem-solving mindset that truly make the difference. Just like knowing how to use a hammer doesn’t make someone a master carpenter, knowing a programming language or framework doesn’t automatically make someone an expert software engineer. Software Engineering is a game of balancing long-term and short-term goals. If you live too far in the future, then you might spend too much time over-engineering & solving problems nobody really has. You do lots of work, but achieve nothing. If you only live in the present, you might get things done now but the pace might not be sustainable. Technical debt, issues wity performance and scalability lead to an abrupt stop. Finding the right balance is far from easy. But, in my opinion, that’s what makes this job exciting. #softwareengineering
