Variability and Manufacturing Performance – Practical application Line balancing is a critical aspect and a fundamental premise of Lean manufacturing and is even considered a goal by its proponents. I fundamentally disagree with this goal! Reducing cycle time (CT) is "the" right goal, but in some special cases we may need to increase cycle time (CT) to increase or protect throughput (TH). The objective of the technical but practical article is to show that an unbalanced line will typically have a shorter cycle time (CT) then a balanced line, and in some circumstances may have a higher throughput (TH). In most cases, the most effective and cost-effective way to reduce cycle time (CT) is to reduce the coefficient of variability (COV).
