Take a look at this marketing video for a Singapore solar company called GetSolar. Now just to be absolutely clear, the intent of this post is not to promote the company cos there are plenty of similar solar companies out there. But I just want to highlight that the 1st homeowner featured (Mr Sandeep Malik) said his payback period is 4 years. His system cost is SGD 40,000, with savings of SGD 10,000 a year. The payback is significantly shorter than what I enjoy for my own house (6-7 years), which I have mentioned several times before (the calculations are in one of my posts: Part 4 of my series on residential solar in Singapore - https://lnkd.in/g6jzuWbD). So how did he achieve it? My guess is that he uses his solar to charge his Tesla during sun hours. This is actually a very good use of solar - maximise the electrical loads that can be powered during sun hours. If you self-consume solar at the time of production, you offset the full cost of electricity (~SGD 0.30/kWh if you are on the regulated tariff). But if you have excess solar which you export to the grid, you only get paid the energy portion of the regulated tariff (what we call T-G or Tariff minus Grid Charge). So obviously you benefit more by shifting electricity demand to the sun hours when the solar system is generating. In the case of EV charging, the savings could be higher depending on how you calculate them. Eg the LCOE of a home solar system is say SGD 0.15/kWh. If you charge your EV at a public charging point, you could be paying something like SGD 0.65/kWh. Without knowing how Mr Sandeep calculates his savings, it's not possible to know exactly how he obtained his 4 year payback period. It could be from the capex side (he got a really good deal) rather than the savings side. Nonetheless, whether 4 years or 6-7 years, it really is a no-brainer decision when typically the panels are guaranteed for 25 years and the inverter for 10 years. If you have your own roof, don't wait. Install solar now. The payback for solar in Singapore is really good.

In South Africa, as we face ongoing energy challenges, there has never been a more critical time to focus on energy efficiency in our homes. By making small, conscious changes, we can reduce our electricity consumption, lower our monthly bills, and contribute to easing the pressure on our national grid. Simple steps to become more energy-efficient at home: Switch to energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting. Unplug devices when not in use to avoid unnecessary energy drain. Consider solar power for electricity and heat pumps for water heating. Improve your home's insulation to reduce the need for excessive heating and cooling. A recent article highlighted that rising electricity costs continues to be a pressing issue for the country, and while national solutions are being explored, individual actions can make a difference. By being energy-conscious, we can not only cut costs but also contribute to reducing strain on our energy infrastructure. Check out this article on South Africa's energy crisis and see how energy efficiency& Interventions can be part of the solution: https://lnkd.in/gNDjeURe. Let's work together to make our homes more energy-efficient and resilient! 🌍💡 #EnergyEfficiency #Sustainability #SouthAfrica #GreenLiving #SolarEnergy #SaveElectricity

Fully agree with the ending sentiments of Philip Barry's opinion piece in the The NZ Herald today..... "Despite these extensive interventions, it’s possible some well-directed adjustments to the Electricity Authority’s rules could improve the sector’s competitiveness. However, any government interventions need to be carefully evaluated and subject to rigorous cost-benefit analysis....there should not be just a panicked response to the immediate situation." https://lnkd.in/gBbUj5TA
Opinion: Wholesale electricity prices – is more Govt intervention the solution or the problem?
