Even good streets can be better. Tram track in Amsterdam retrofitted with grass track to further green this already lovely transport corridor. Creating an even greener colour palette. The greenness of a street promotes active travel by enhancing environmental esthetics and creating a route people will make a concious decision or a detour to take. Have you heard of the GVI (green view index) which is a way through photos to measure the amount of vegetation visible at eye level. But does the full palette of the street gives a greater understanding of how warm and inviting or cold and sterile a place is. As Sydney's apartment boom continues unabated, and our scorching summer temperatures continue to smash records, it would be good to see more public conversation around #greenspaces - both public and private - for the benefit of #urbansustainability and #liveablecities. Gardens connect us to nature and provide pleasant spaces to hang out with friends and family, or just chillax with a good book or podcast. As our city goes up, it makes sense that our gardens do too. A key benefit of a #greenroof is that it mitigates the "urban heat island" effect. We already know that ditching dark roofs (as has been mandated for new development in SW Sydney) reduces solar absorbance and can lower a suburb's ambient temperature by 2.4 degrees, while also keeping the interior of the house cooler. Other jurisdictions, including California, have cool roofing requirements in their building energy codes. Singapore has government-led incentives, such as planning policies that offer developers additional floor space, or grants that cover up to 50% of the installation costs of #greenroofs and #greenwalls. (Perhaps the high-rise building defects and strata shenanigans are taking up all the news space?
