We have an exciting fundraising event planned for September 2024 with the help of one of our beneficiary parents, and maybe you too?! One of our dedicated beneficiary parents Craig, is planning an epic 250mile bike ride in aid of The Joshua Tree! Our charity currently supports Craig and his family as their son Harry undergoes treatment for Leukaemia. Craig has a strong background in cycling and has worked for British Cycling developing their participation and cycle leadership programmes. He would like to offer his skills to help us to organise a fundraising event for the charity. As a first for us, we are keen to explore if other members of The Joshua Tree family would be interested to get on board to help plan and run the event, so we can truly make it an event by and for The Joshua Tree. What’s in the plan so far? The idea of the event is a multi-stage led bike ride, travelling from the Giraffes at Chester Zoo to the Giraffes at London Zoo covering a total of 250 miles. The event is to take place from 13th – 15th September 2024 with a number of riders taking on the challenge, including a few well known faces from the world of Sport and TV! There are lots more opportunities to shape the event, so this is where you could come in. How could you get involved? Although this isn’t a direct call for people who may be interested to ride in the event (although that could be an option), we are interested to hear if anyone is able and interested to support the event in which ever way you can. From skills in project management or marketing/advertisement, sponsorship of resources or to support the event. Any input is welcome! If you are interested in finding out more, we will be holding an informal fact-finding session at the Support Centre in Sandiway from 6pm – 7pm on Thursday 18th January. Road cycling and investor meetings don't go together? Those who have attended our Stockpicker Summits know that the opposite is true. That's why we're launching a new format: 𝗛𝗔𝗜𝗕 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 🚴♂️ Our concept consists of two components: 1. Investor meetings with a twist We bring European investors together with exciting listed companies. And where better to do this than on a road bike? Admittedly, conversations aren't ideal during an ascent, but they're all the better over a bite to eat afterwards or on the flat sections. 2. Every kilometer counts ❣ To ensure that not only the tour participants benefit but also people in need of help, we will set a charitable cause in advance. Everyone can then decide for themselves how much to donate per kilometer completed. The minimum pledge is €1. The locations will vary. We'll start with 📍 Mallorca! Cyclists know the island is the perfect spot for this format. There are only two conditions: No e-bikes and no Rabobank jerseys :) I am already looking forward to the first rides together. This list is worth ~$20 MILLION! Plus, just this month alone, there are TWO MORE out there worth ~£40 million. Yesterday, it was the London Marathon. A week ago, it was the Boston Marathon. The day before, it was the Manchester Marathon. These are three huge events with well over 100,000 runners. Around 30,000 runners represent charities across these three events, all within a few weeks of each other. That's MASSIVE IMPACT. This is people from all over the World with vastly different running experiences and often entirely different life experiences coming together to fulfil a personal goal while benefiting people in need. What I find most inspiring about this is that many of these runners have NEVER run a marathon before. They are doing something SERIOUSLY out of their comfort zone. But what pushes them through? It's the mission, the vision, and the impact they are having. The possibility of running a marathon has also been on the bucket list. I find the support of the running community even more astounding. Following Boston, I saw multiple pictures of runners CARRYING other runners across the finish line. I read stories of how faster runners purposely ran close to the cut-off to help others finish. I saw (and also contributed) to community groups that aid in fundraising for these events. The running community is a solid one. It is non-judgmental. We're there for each other. As a new month starts, and wow we're 6 months through the year already, I wanted to share a well kept secret! In a world where most mother-son bonding might involve video games or baking cookies, my son, Alfie Leach and I are taking it to a whole new level - trekking through Peru following the challenging Anacascocha Trail to Macchu Pichu with double gold Olympian Dame Kelly Holmes to raise funds for her charity, the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust https://lnkd.in/eA3JC9iv, dedicated to empowering young people through sports. We've chosen this charity because having a Champion in your Corner is something every child and young person should have. Young people really are facing so much adversity after the pandemic ancost of living crisis. Working with the Trust, existing and former champions from the world of elite sport pass on their winning mindset through coaching and mentoring, boosting young people’s confidence & developing the positive behaviours and skillsets they need to succeed in education, work and life. The difference we are making is real 💫The charity was founded on the belief that it only takes one person to make a difference in a young persons life – and the charity achieve some incredible heights such as the recent support with their social action project: https://lnkd.in/eJJvGhWQ I was initially made aware of the charity by my fabulous friend Mike Thorpe when he launched his new enterprise #thorpeandpartners. I was blown away that he had the time and energy to add giving back to his launch agenda and for such an incredible cause. But this isn't your typical mother-son bonding trip; it's an epic adventure filled with laughter and determination, 5 days of challenging trekking at 4500m above sea level, and probably a few "I can't feel my legs" moments, especially trying to keep up with an Olympian. Alfie was also diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes recently so we're not just conquering Machu Picchu; we're conquering obstacles and changing lives along the way. And what better way to support such a cause than by literally climbing mountains? Craig's message was clear: having a platform and the ability to make a difference creates not just an opportunity, but also a responsibility. At the Rotary District 9640 Conference, Craig Foster AM shared his inspiring journey through football, his broadcasting career with SBS, and his involvement in the Matildas' landmark compensation deal. Also, his recounting of the campaign to save Hakeem al-Araibi, a young man wrongfully imprisoned in Thailand (check out the story here: https://lnkd.in/g_WbNpuX). Craig's message resonates deeply with our mission at Rotaract Australia. Rotaractors in Australia have access to resources change the world, accelerate their careers and make meaningful connections through: 1. A global network of 1.4 million community leaders, business professionals from all industries, charity founders and more through Rotary International. 2. The freedom to engage in thousands of existing charitable projects in all areas of service or even launch our own project with the support of their club and the wider Rotary network. 3. The opportunity to connect socially with like-minded people who share a passion to do more. Currently, there are fewer than 1,000 Rotaractors in Australia accessing these opportunities. In line with Craig's mindset, it is our responsibility to make sure that ALL young Australians know that these opportunities are open to them and make Rotaract accessible to all. There is no reason why there shouldn't be 20,000 or 100,000 or more Rotarators in Australia. > If your university doesn't have a Rotaract club, reach out. > If you run a youth centre that isn't connected to a Rotaract club, reach out. > If you're a local council representative and would like to know more, reach out. Over the next financial year, I am dedicated to spreading this message and expanding our reach. We have something really great here that should be accessed by MANY more young Australians.
