A new La Trobe research institute aims to safeguard global food security by innovating 'from the paddock to the gut'. Launched today at AgriBio, the La Trobe Institute for Sustainable Agriculture and Food (LISAF) will undertake research across the agri-food chain. With growing population, decreasing arable land and the effects of climate change, a key focus of the institute will be finding innovative ways to grow increased volumes of food and medicinal crops with greater resilience. 'Our new La Trobe Institute has a bold ambition to combine experts and programs in agrifood across production, business, supply chains and consumer preferences—with application of the latest technology, AI and Big Data—to create a unique one-stop shop across the span of agrifood,' said LISAF Director Professor Tony Bacic. Among the institute's plans are: 🌾The establishment of a $28 million ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Protected Cropping (with funding from the Federal Government, La Trobe and industry sponsors) 🌾 Joining the Australian Plant Phenomics Network, with a $7m grant from the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Learn more: https://lnkd.in/giHM9DdK #foodsecurity #protectedcropping #agribusiness #latrobeuni

It’s easy to find media reports about the negative impacts of #crop #farming. A new episode of Foodpod Denmark takes another angle – the potential solutions. Three experts talk about the challenges that are driving their research, the benefits of #AI and the development of new practical tools for farmers. I hope you enjoy it!
🌎Can farmers grow the food we need without stressing the planet? Foodpod Denmark returns with a new episode that focuses on the efforts to minimise #greenhousegas emissions from the soil and prevent #nutrientrunoff into fragile waterways 🌱🐟 We’ve talked to three experts who are building new knowledge and digital tools for #sustainable #agriculture. From the food science department at Aarhus University, Ivan Paponov explains the dilemma of nitrogen use in the field and his team’s work to understand the processes that enable plants to absorb nitrogen efficiently. Philipp Trenel from Danish Technological Institute introduces the #SmartField initiative, a five-year project that aims to build a lighthouse for understanding and controlling nitrous oxide – a greenhouse gas 300 times more potent than #CO2. Mette Kramer Langgaard from SEGES Innovation describes the field trials and satellite data behind the latest digital tools for farmers and a new age of traceability in primary production. Find the new episode from Foodpod Denmark on your favourite podcast app or tune in here 👉https://bit.ly/41Ywkdn With thanks to Søren Madsen at Agro Food Park for the inspiration and to SEGES Innovation for the photo

The International Seed Federation brought together thousands of industry leaders and experts to discuss pivotal advancements and challenges in the seed industry. Here are some key takeaways from The Context Network principals, Jeffrey Verpaalen and Donald Coles, who were present in Rotterdam this week for the 100th anniversary of the ISF World Seed Congress 2024: 🔬 Unlocking the Full Potential of Plant Breeding Innovation Across Frontiers: Speakers explored the multifaceted landscape surrounding gene-edited technology to create valuable new crop varieties that enhance food quality, environmental adaptability and sustainability while addressing complex challenges within the global food system. 🧬 Access and Benefit-Sharing for Digital Sequence Information: What’s in it for Agriculture and Food Security?: The panel highlighted the importance of DSI in driving genetic improvements and biodiversity conservation. 🌍 Addressing Microplastics in Seed Treatments: Microplastics in seed treatments and their environmental impact are pressing issues for the seed industry as they intersect with global efforts to reduce microplastic pollution. 🌐 Global Collaboration: Emphasizing the need for international cooperation to ensure seed security and sustainable agricultural practices. Panel discussions highlighted that the EU seed sector is highly dynamic; focused on innovation and international trade. Currently, over 44,000 varieties of agricultural and vegetable species are registered for marketing across the European Union. Additionally, Canada has a new streamlined regulatory approach, that plants without foreign DNA no longer require specific regulation. Exciting developments and insightful discussions are paving the way for a more sustainable and innovative future in agriculture! 🌱 #ISF2024 #SeedInnovation #SustainableAgriculture #PlantBreeding #AdvanceAgriculture

Hello everyone! Erin Wynands here from the ACER Team. Last week, I traveled to Ottawa to attend the Canadian Agri-Food in a Sustainable World Conference put on by the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI) and the Centre for Agri-Food Benchmarking. With 200 attendees and a diverse mix of panelists bringing unique perspectives, it was a stimulating two days thinking about all things agri-food sustainability policy. It was heartening to see so many organizations and individuals dedicated to the sector and improving sustainability. Canadian agriculture has come a long way in improving productivity and economic outcomes and we have a positive story to tell. Though, when it comes to delivering meaningful improved sustainability outcomes, we still face many challenges. There is work to do on bridging the gap between policy makers and those in the supply chain, being more discerning about the quality of environmental data and how it is being aggregated, and supporting farmers with practice and technology implementation. I left the conference with more questions than answers, which reinforces the idea that sustainability is not a box to be checked but rather a journey of continuous improvement. ACER is committed to advancing sustainability in livestock agriculture through research and knowledge translation and transfer and we welcome the opportunity to connect with others who share this interest. I would like to thank the conference organizers and attendees for a thought provoking experience! #Sustainability #Agriculture #AgriFood #Policy #Conference

We'll start collaborating in an amazing team to footprint 👣 the European food system, improve 👌🏻 the LCA methodology to do so, explore 🔍the power of direct emissions and land use measurements by drones and remote sensing, and ⚖️ examine the economic & social tradeoffs. Our team will assist in providing datasets for hundreds of food items in each member state! #FOODTURE
