Rich recently took the campaign to Stamford, CT. By all accounts, Stamford is growing and thriving. When we think about the change we hope to see in this country, it’s easy to look past the communities that are doing well. In fact, even within these communities, a sense of apathy can begin to creep in. For communities like this, the question becomes, is the community working for all of us or just some of us? In the latest edition of the ITE—A Community of Transportation Professionals Journal, Meha Bola and I emphasize the critical role of community engagement in transportation planning through our work with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County and two California State University, Monterey Bay professors Fred Watson and Scott Waltz on the Fort Ord Regional Trail and Greenway (FORTAG). In the article, Meha Bola and I emphasize the critical role of community engagement in transportation projects. As transportation professionals, we have a responsibility to actively connect with the public, stakeholders, and decision-makers to ensure our projects truly reflect the values and needs of the communities we serve. Meaningful engagement isn’t just a step in the process—it’s a foundation for success. Here’s how we believe it can make a difference: - Enhancing safety by understanding and addressing diverse mobility needs. - Ensuring equity through the inclusion of underrepresented voices. - Building public trust and transparency via active, open involvement. - Fostering innovation and forward-thinking by integrating lived experiences and new perspectives. We hope this article inspires our peers to prioritize authentic engagement, creating transportation solutions that are not only technically sound but also equitable, safe, and innovative.
