🐱🐟 FRIENDS & FAMILY PET FOOD TO LAUNCH CULTIVATED FISH TREATS San Francisco’s Friends & Family Pet Food Company. has partnered with Singaporean cultivated seafood producer Umami Bioworks to launch cat treats in both geographies by early 2025. Part of ProVeg International’s 12th incubator, the pet food startup is the brainchild of CEO Joshua Errett – former VP at CULT Food Science – pet industry veteran COO Jonny C., and veterinarian and chief science officer Sarah Dodd. “Friends & Family is a brand for cultivated meat and fish, precision fermentation and any sustainable ingredient that can replace animal proteins,” says Errett, who is also the former co-founder of cultivated pet food startup BioCraft Pet Nutrition (previously Because Animals). “We partner with top-tier startups and scientists making animal-free ingredients, and give them a path to market using our proprietary pet food platform,” he adds. “Umami Bioworks is our first and most important partnership, and we have some other big names in the pipeline.” The cat treats will be packaged as bars and in bags, and contain a white fish blend “similar to the fish meal that’s in commercial caught-fish pet foods today”, according to Errett. Friends & Family, which is now raising capital, enters a market that has seen major advancements recently. Both Meatly and BioCraft Pet Nutrition have slashed the costs of their innovations by reimagining culture media. Czech startup Bene Meat Technologies, meanwhile, was the first cultivated meat startup to be listed on the EU’s feed register (which is different from regulatory approval for consumption), and showcased its product at the Interzoo trade fair in Nuremberg in May. Major Development in Cultivated Meat Industry 🍖 Meatly, a UK-based startup, has recently achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first company in Europe to receive regulatory approval for selling pet food made from cultivated meat. This approval marks the first time a cultivated meat product will be available for sale in Europe, with Meatly's cultivated chicken pet food expected on UK shelves by the end of 2024. According to Owen Ensor, CEO of Meatly, "The UK has become the first country in Europe to approve a cultivated meat product for sale; this is a significant milestone for the industry." While the cultivated meat sector faces varied consumer perceptions and regulatory challenges, Meatly's focus on pet food provides a strategic pathway to commercialization. Pets consume 20% of the world's meat, and the global pet market is projected to grow to nearly $500bn by 2030, indicating a substantial market potential. Ensor adds, "Our pets crave meat, and most people want to feed them meat, but they also want to make sustainable choices and not harm other animals. Today the UK became the first European company to approve putting cultivated meat in pet food (specifically cultivated chicken cells by Meatly). In our RethinkX report in 2019 we identified the pet food industry as being an ideal market entry point for cultivated meat - for a few reasons. 🐶 Pet food products offer flexibility with ingredients and product forms, challenging to perfect for human consumption. 🐈⬛ Cultivated meat can consist of cells from various animals (🐁 mouse or 🐇 rabbit anyone?), ensuring optimal nutrition and taste for pets. 🍖Utilizing meat considered "waste" redirects profits from the animal meat industry due to the industry's substantial size. 🐕 Globally, the pet food industry is huge, exceeding $150 billion, with US cats and dogs ranking fifth in meat consumption if considered a separate country. Overall, this is a crucial step for the cultivated meat industry, and emphasizes the thesis that this will be an ingredient-led disruption. Edible Insects Pet Food Survey. Results: Part 2 (of 3) - The Pet Food Industry Want to know what we all think about edible insects in our pet food? To help us get a representative snapshot about what we really think about edible insects in our pet foods, we polled over 200 Linkedin members with a series of questions. In the following 3-part series, we examine a number of important questions and responses from the survey: Part 2 – The Pet Food Industry So, how do our respondents view the development of insects based pet foods in the UK? We asked them several questions about how they see what’s on offer from the industry: ⚫ When asked about whether the Pet Food Industry should be investing more in insect products as a main source of pet food protein, 75% agreed and thought more should be done to prioritise these products. ⚫ And a whopping 82% of respondents felt there was a great need to receive more education and information about the nutritional benefits of edible insects in their pet’s diet. ⚫ However, with this thirst for more information in mind, the majority of contributors (61%) indicated that they did not rate veterinarians’ recommendations as being a deciding factor on whether to feed their pets edible insect protein. Conclusion: It’s early days for novel foods and insect protein in general - but there is a huge increase in independent pet food producers. These brands are introducing insect protein into their products and breaking with the norms of the pet food giants and setting an interesting pace. There are clear signals that the public are interested in knowing more about the befits of insect protein – but who do they trust to provide that? 🇬🇧🐾 UK APPROVES MEATLY’S PET FOOD AS EUROPE’S FIRST CULTIVATED MEAT Meatly has become the first company to be approved to sell cultivated meat in Europe, after UK regulators gave the green light to the startup earlier this month. Following the decision by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) on July 2, Meatly can supply its cultivated chicken to dog food manufacturers, marking the first time a cultivated pet food product is cleared for sale anywhere in the world. It signals the end of Meatly’s 18-month-long consultation process with government bodies in the UK, which joins Singapore, the US and Israel as the fourth country to approve cultivated meat. The startup plans to launch the first samples of its dog food before the end of the year, beyond which, it will focus on reducing costs. Having secured £3.6M in investment to date, Meatly is now targeting a Series A round, which will help it scale up production to reach industrial volumes in the next three years. “We’re currently conducting product development and conducting feeding trials on dogs,” Meatly CEO Owen Ensor told Green Queen. “We’re primarily focused on wet pet food for now.” “Meatly’s regulatory approval is a landmark event for the industry,” said Jim Mellon, founder of Agronomics Limited, an investor in Meatly. “Through its technological innovation and close work with governing authorities, Meatly is helping prove that we can succeed in commercialising cultivated products for pets across the UK.” “The UK is a world leader in developing cultivated meat and the approval of a cultivated pet food is an important milestone.
