🏙️ Big News for Downtown Raleigh's Future! 🌟 On behalf of Downtown Raleigh Alliance and the City of Raleigh Municipal Government, I am thrilled to share the first set of recommendations from the Downtown Raleigh Economic Development Strategy led by consultant team Interface Studio, &Access, and Ninigret Partners. These first TEN big ideas focus on activating Fayetteville Street- revitalizing the street as well as the surrounding business district. Given the street’s prominence for the city and state, revitalizing Fayetteville Street and the adjacent downtown core is essential for downtown’s future and is a key element of this overall strategy effort. Ideas include embracing opportunities for improving streetscapes, creating family-friendly events and activations, positioning Fayetteville Street as North Carolina’s Main Street, and creating more defined shopping & dining and cultural arts & entertainment districts. 📱 Check out the ten big ideas for yourself on your mobile or desktop through the linked e-reader version of the report, including exciting visualizations and detailed recommendations. On a personal level, I am really looking forward to seeing all of the good that can come from these ideas. It has been many years of advocacy work to get this point of first recommendations for such a significant civic street and central business district. Those that have been in Raleigh know that the street itself has been in need of new strategic direction and repositioning since before the pandemic. Excited now to see reinvestment in the public realm, new vitality, and meaningful support & attention for our local, downtown small businesses. Of course, these ideas need support to see implementation. More often than not, we are designing streets based on certain design guidelines and/or worse, "because the tender specs says so". There is a danger to this: we fail to understand ground sentiments, and placemaking becomes just a formality to conform to pressures that, on hindsight, were totally unnecessary. Designers therefore need to be bold and pragmatic. Design for what you want the future to enjoy. Human beings are adaptable beings, so let our species adapt to our designs. Alas it is easier said than done. Hence we all need to band together and effect our kind of 'climate change action' in this aspect. We can make our streets safer for all to enjoy. Enough of the car-centric narrative! #saferstreets #safestreet #pedestrianfriendly #20isplenty

What can be done with the people that are already there to help them be a part of the vision, success? City of Mesa has shown success with it’s diversity of its submarkets, giving each area an identity, for example Longbow or the Asian District. By doing so the community support and involvement has increased. The interest by complimentary uses is peaking. Redevelopment translates to surprises. In the Foreword to “Main Street Mavericks”, my friend Jef Buehler talks about the nature of growth. Alone and isolated, growth can mean both a city or a cancer. We need to ask ourselves about the type of growth we want in our downtowns. I like to think of “Main Street Mavericks” as a positive, hopeful proposition that sees an opportunity of growth after growth, for towns that have achieved most of the goals they set before embarking on the revitalization journey. When most of the buildings are rehabbed, vacancy is low, entrepreneurs move into town and the local economy is vital, further growth might be evasive. The next frontier is to embark on a journey of transformation where the entire main street turns into an experience, with outstanding hospitality and where each street facing business is the host of downtown.
