We’re disappointed that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has taken the decision to temporarily close Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) capital grants due to high demand. Closing these grants at a time when Higher Tier options are unavailable creates more uncertainty for #farmers and will disrupt planning. The high level of demand shows farmers are eager to farm with nature, delivering public goods while building resilient businesses. DEFRA must urgently set out plans for both SFI capital grants and Higher Tier to enable farmers to fully engage in environmental farming schemes. 📸 Tim Scrivener / WTML

Agroforestry incl. bigger, bushier hedgerows plays an important role in helping farming adapt to a changing climate. Integration of trees into farming systems will ensure sustainable food production, reverse declines in nature & tackle climate change. So we were delighted when DEFRA included agroforestry options in ELM. But farmers need grant support now to make a transition to nature friendly farming so disappointed to see agroforestry capital grants alongside many others paused Nature Friendly Farming Network Soil Association LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) NFU (National Farmers' Union) Food, Farming and Countryside Commission Forestry Commission . Let’s hope this is only temporary and farmers get the support and long-term certainty they need for a fair transition.
