As land resources degrade and become scarcer, competition and disputes increase over their access and use and become a prominent feature in many conflicts. Over the last 60 years, at least 40% of all intrastate conflicts had a link to natural resources, including land. At the same time, conflict and fragility drive vulnerability to environmental degradation and the impacts of climate change. The Government of Balochistan has approved the Balochistan Climate Change Policy (BCCP), developed in collaboration with #UNDPinPakistan. This policy sets the course for tackling climate challenges in the province, outlining actionable strategies for adaptation, mitigation and resource allocation. The BCCP, duly notified for implementation, signifies a commitment from both the Balochistan government and UNDP to support #ClimateAction in the province. In an interview with Arab News, Khaled Al-Abdulkader, CEO of Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Vegetation Cover Development, underlined the significance of restoring degraded lands as a cornerstone of integrated environmental action. Al-Abdulkader highlighted how Saudi Arabia is implementing initiatives that directly align with the objectives of the UN’s three major conventions: the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. In Peru, we are supporting MINAM in the development and validation of a conceptual proposal for the processes, procedures, and functions necessary for the operationalization of the monitoring and evaluation system for the adaptation measures outlined in the NDCs. This effort is part of the project PAF23-T1-15 "Implementing Actions of the National Adaptation Plan" - Peru. With UN Convention to Combat Desertification #COP16 full under way, and land resources at the heart of discussions on peace and sustainable development, our 🆕 report "Undercurrents: How conflict, climate change and the environment intersect in Yemen" shows the centrality of #land (and of course also #water resources) in driving local conflict in #Yemen, which in turn feeds into the ongoing war, further deteriorating the humanitarian situation and development prospects of people in the country. By exacerbating pressures on land and water resources, #climatechange will only make the situation worse. That is why integrating #climateadaptation into recovery and reconstruction plans, and investing in #land restoration, #environmentalprotection and water resource management will be critical to support the pathway to peace in #Yemen.
