👏 Huge congratulations to Diego Alejandro Hernández on his latest publication in Chemosphere titled "New perspectives on the anaerobic degradation of BTEX: Mechanisms, pathways, and intermediates." This study sheds light on advanced mechanisms in BTEX biodegradation, offering valuable insights for environmental bioremediation. Highlights of the paper: 🌟 Fumarate addition emerges as an alternative activation step for ethylbenzene biodegradation. 🌟 Benzyl alcohol and cresol serve as key intermediates in toluene degradation. 🌟 Omics technologies are instrumental in pinpointing bottlenecks and uncovering unknown compounds. 🌟 Benzene undergoes both methylation and hydroxylation as simultaneous activation mechanisms. This research opens up exciting new directions in anaerobic BTEX biodegradation. One of the main research topics of the Research group for bioprocess intensification from Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Technology Novi Sad, University of Novi Sad, is development of novel valorization routes for different types of agro-industrial waste/effluents using beneficial microorganisms, thus defining bioprocess solutions for production of wide spectra of microbial value-added products. Our newest study was published in collaboration with colleagues from Department of Food Preservation Enginnering with expertise in development of novel technological processes for fruit and vegetable processing, as well as with research group From Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad, proficient in profiling, recovery and development of application routes for bioactive compounds. 📢 New Publication Alert! 📢 We're happy to share our latest research exploring the H₂ consumption kinetics of various acetogenic bacteria! 🌱🔬 To our own surprise, we found that the H₂ consumption rate of acetogens follows first-order kinetics up to saturated H₂ concentrations, contrasting the commonly assumed Monod kinetics. This discovery highlights the critical role of the dissolved H₂ concentration in understanding acetogenesis rates in biotechnological and environmental systems! We also found that (biomass-specific) first-order rate coefficients varied significantly among acetogenic strains, with the highest rate for Acetobacterium wieringae. This work was no small feat, so a special shoutout to first author Laura Muñoz, for her dedication in performing the experimental work! Also the modelling efforts of Jacopo Catalano were crucial to exclude the effect of mass transfer resistance in our bottles. Our research paper, "Optimization, Production, Purification of Laccase Enzyme from Bacillus sp," has been published in the prestigious Journal of New Developments in Chemistry! 📝 This groundbreaking study delves into the production of laccase enzymes from Bacillus sp, highlighting their crucial role in environmental sustainability. Laccase enzymes are pivotal in processes like bioremediation, biodegradation, and decolorization of pollutants, offering promising solutions for a cleaner planet. 🌱 Utilizing agro waste, specifically rice bran, as a substrate, our research team embarked on a journey to optimize production parameters such as pH, temperature, and inducers. Through meticulous experimentation, we achieved mass-scale production of laccase enzymes, paving the way for their application in various industries, including pharmaceuticals. 🔍 Our study underwent rigorous scrutiny and analysis, including microbial screening and physiochemical characterization. Techniques such as Gel Filtration Chromatography, Dialysis, and Ammonium Sulfate Precipitation were employed for purification, ensuring the quality and efficacy of the enzyme product. 【Microbial Diversity and Key Metabolic Pathways in Lignite-Promoted Anaerobic Fermentation with Residual Sludge】 Full article: https://lnkd.in/gtcNcjDr (Authored by Yawei Zhang, et al., from Henan Polytechnic University (China), etc.) Anaerobic digestion, a widely used sludge resourcing technology, utilizes anaerobic microorganisms to convert complex organic matter into energy sources such as volatile fatty acids and methane. In recent years, the co-fermentation of different substrates has become a hot research topic in anaerobic fermentation. This study conducts three sets of experiments with different ratios of residual sludge co-anaerobic fermentation with lignite to analyze the stages of degradation and transformation of methane, and analyzes the bacterial colony structure, metabolic pathways, and interactions between residual sludge and lignite in anaerobic methanogenic fermentation with different mass ratios using macrogenomics sequencing. 

🥼 🔬 🧪 Paper of the Day ❗ ❗ ❗ The article discusses the engineering of a Pseudomonas putida strain as a whole-cell biosensor (WCB) that can detect a wide range of chemicals, including industrially relevant metabolites and environmental pollutants. The researchers rewired the sugar catabolism of P. putida to make it dependent on specific analytes for growth, coupling biomass formation and fluorescence output to the concentration of the target compound. They demonstrated the versatility of this WCB platform by using it to detect D-lactate, protocatechuate, and products of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) degradation. The engineered sensor strains showed high sensitivity and a wide dynamic range, making them suitable for high-throughput screening applications. I am very excited to share that my latest PhD manuscript titled “Amended Vegetation Filters as nature-based solutions for the treatment of pharmaceuticals: infiltration experiments coupled to reactive transport modelling” was published in the special issue “New Strategies for Detection and Bioremediation of Contaminated Water and Soil” of the Toxics journal! The extensive presence and potential ecological and human health implications of pharmaceuticals, a well-known group of contaminants of emerging concern, in the environment, emphasize the need for their thorough investigation and management. Our study presents a sustainable and nature-based solution - wastewater treatment through vegetation filters amended with woodchips - focused on attenuating these compounds, reaching removal rates exceeding 96%.
