Today, 24 January marks International Day of Education – a day recognised by the United Nations in celebration of the role of education for peace and development and for building sustainable and resilient societies. This day is significant to us because of our mission to help develop resilient communities globally, which is reflected in our focus of advancing equitable access to quality Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education. Our redefined STEAM priority areas centralise around Teacher Capacity Development, Primary School Programs and Scholarships and Bursaries. Zeena Abdelbasit , a GHD Foundation bursary recipient who now works at GHD full time as an Engineering graduate in the Air Quality Group in the Waterloo office says, “When I received the bursary from the GHD Foundation, the financial support it provided allowed me to focus more on my studies and extracurricular activities and give back to my community. As a woman in engineering, I face systematic challenges in pursuing my career goals – however this award provided me with hope and encouragement about diversity in STEAM fields.” Let’s keep working together to create resilient communities for a more diverse workforce of the future. #InternationalDayofEducation #GHDFoundation #Impactroadmap

🌟 Social value initiative aims to bring memorable STEM experience to more than 2,000 Northern Ireland pupils 🌟 For the past year The Big Bridge has been making waves across Northern Ireland and Ireland. The innovative STEM skills learning experience is a social value partnership supported by leading construction and engineering companies Design ID Consulting Limited, Farrans Construction, FP McCann Ltd and ADMAN GROUP. The Big Bridge, which is a 13m long and 3m high cable-stayed model bridge, launched its second year at the Northern Ireland Science Summer School hosted by Professor Brian Cox in Ballymena this week. Hundreds of enthusiastic students built and tested their very own bridge and learnt about careers in construction and engineering. The Bridge will travel to schools across the country throughout this year to inspire the next generation of construction and engineering talent through interactive workshops based on forming cohesive structures, project management and teamwork. The Big Bridge is supported by partner organisations in the construction and civil engineering industry who aim to ensure that the kit and training team are provided at a low cost to schools. https://lnkd.in/emg_RzMe

Seeking representatives from diverse Indigenous & Indigenous Ally organizations and institutions across Alberta willing to take on an advisory role as a part of our Indigenous Studies Diploma Program Advisory Committee. About the Indigenous Studies Diploma Program: More than a program, Indigenous Studies strives to be a community centered in Indigenous culture, community, and relationships – to self, one another, the land and our more than human relatives. Authentic, meaningful, and purposeful Indigenous community centered land-based learning experiences are at the heart of our curriculum. Through the intentional interweaving of scholarly academic endeavors with Indigenous community service, engagement and relational networks of support, we challenge conventional contemporary notions of teacher, text and classroom. Students, Faculty, Staff, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Cultural advisors, together strive to create a learning environment grounded in a culture of inclusion and belonging where we all can walk and learn alongside one another, with and from community and the land. In an ever-changing world, now more than ever, it is essential to reclaim, restore, establish, build, maintain, preserve, and nurture ties to traditional ways of knowing, ways of being, ways of doing. It is through the revitalization and implementation of traditional land-based community centered principles and practices that the solutions to contemporary societal challenges can be found. It is up to the combined collaborative efforts of community leaders, families, Elders, cultural advisors, knowledge keepers, administrators, educators, and support staff to equip our program learners with the tools, experience, skills and knowledge required to tackle and overcome these challenges with confidence in themselves and their community. Education and the authentic interweaving and blending of traditional Indigenous ways of knowing with contemporary western education practices is the way forward. Courses in our program are designed with this in mind. Your contributions as a Program Advisory Committee Member: Your insight and expertise in community are incredibly valuable. As we plan for the future of our Indigenous Studies Diploma Program, I am requesting the gift of your time to share your knowledge and experience with us, to help us shape and guide the direction of the program so that we may uplift our communities in meaningful and purposeful ways. Annual meetings take place in the Fall or Winter term, typically lasting between 2-3 hours. If you have questions, would like additional information, or are interested and available, please email an expression of interest outlining who you are, your connections to Indigenous communities to Jeanien.bell@norquest.ca, on or before November 30th, 2025.

The promotion and tenure process at a university is often fraught with anxiety for the candidates, but it is also eye-opening for those writing evaluations and recommendations. When you’re surrounded by talented colleagues doing top-flight work every day, it’s easy to become jaded. Reading a single dossier is taxing, even exhausting, but it does provide a re-awakening, and a much deeper appreciation for the dedication of a unit’s faculty and all that they do. Meaningful research, inspiring teaching, impactful extension work, and/or high-profile service activities really should not be distilled into 4-5 pages by P&T committees or department heads/chairs, but we’ll keep doing so until a better system comes along. #academia #university #promotion #tenure #breathedeep #youvegotthis
