Methods matter. In the Scope 3 space, methods help practitioners and stakeholders to understand action and impact towards a NetZero world. This is such a crucial topic at this moment for the Scope 3 community, and to advance the conversation all practitioners need to understand the fundamentals. Also, this is very timely, as this will be one of the topics to deep-dive during the next session of the Food and Ag Working Group of the Value Change Initiative, brilliantly led by Naomi Montenegro Navarro. For the effectiveness in reporting and accounting of GHG, more importantly to ensure to set a boundary for scopes of GHG sources in the project/organization as reasonably as practicable in consultation with senior management.#esgreporting

How do we make real progress against climate goals? One important step is measuring things correctly. I've seen a lot of confusion in understanding inventory vs project accounting and this is a great overview from the GHG Protocol team that should provide some clarity. "Throughout both the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and Project Protocol, there is a clear recognition of the value these two fundamental accounting methods provide to organizations in evaluating their decarbonization strategies. Companies should generate and use both types of information to inform decision-making." At Indigo we've worked hard to build the tools and science to help farmers and companies use both accounting methodologies and use them appropriately to make a meaningful impact.

Today, the GHG Protocol secretariat releases a summary of stakeholder proposals for revisions to the Scope 2 Guidance. Feedback from over 400 survey submissions, 70 proposal submissions, and conversations held with over 1000 stakeholders between late 2021 and late 2023 have shown strong interest in location-, market-, and project-based accounting and have revealed several key suggestions for improvement. The Scope 2 Proposal Summary, which now accompanies the summary of survey responses published earlier this year, categorizes the possible reporting structures and suggested changes that were commonly presented by stakeholders. It also puts forth suggested starting points for Scope 2 Technical Working Group discussions in early 2024. The secretariat is currently soliciting applications for its new governance bodies by January 15th, 2024.

Last week the GHG Protocol Secretariat released final summary of Scope 2 survey feedback. The survey feedback will inform the upcoming update to the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance that was published in 2015. Below are some highlights of the findings. I would encourage companies to follow this updating process as it will likely have quite significant impacts on corporate RE strategy. 1. The GHG Protocol should consolidate its requirements across all these documents, i.e., scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3 into a single document to streamline accounting and reporting. 2. The GHG Protocol should coordinate closely with other GHG programs and requirements, including the SBTi, EU CSRD, US SEC, and ISSB. 3. There are significant feedbacks representing multiple perspectives on the dual reporting requirement. Support for the location-based approach emphasized that it appropriately represents emissions throughout the reporting entity's value chain; while support for the market-based approach emphasized that it is necessary to account for purchased energy attribute claims, which may differ from the actual energy flow in the grid. 4. The updates should consider accounting standards and clean energy procurement opportunities that are feasible to implement for organizations of all sizes, sophistication levels, and global regions. 5. There is calling for new emission impact-based reporting approach for demonstrating the emission reduction effects of buying clean energy. This approach involves accounting for the emission reductions resulting from replacing carbon-intensive power plants with cleaner energy sources.

Very important for #VCM to become compatible with Article 6. CCS+ initiative is developping methodologies with Verra keeping in mind the Article 6 principles that are currently put in practice by the #SB and the #COP28
