I just published a short essay about Peter Eisenstadt's remarkable book, Against the Hounds of Hell: A Life of Howard Thurman. If you don't know Howard Thurman, or even if you do, this short piece provides a succinct overview of his critical importance. Three main points - ✅ He was a leading religious figure in the 20th century ✅ He was the intellectual architect of African American religious nonviolence ✅ His teachings are an ethical compass for navigating our complex lives today Thanks to the journal Peace and Change: A Journal of Peace Research for the opportunity to write about Thurman. https://lnkd.in/ebZCk2Jj

May 2024 Book of the Month: "African and Caribbean People in Britain" - explore the captivating narratives and legacies of African and Caribbean communities in Britain. Despite tireless efforts from researchers and advocates, the rich history of African and Caribbean communities in Britain is often oversimplified. Reduced to a singular narrative that commences in 1948 with the arrival of the Empire Windrush, this portrayal neglects the intricate tapestry of experiences that intertwine with British history. Africans and Caribbeans have long been integral to Britain's story, from Roman legionaries to Elizabethan servants and colonial-era leaders. Instead of recognising the depth of this shared history, it often only intersects with mainstream narratives during moments of egregious injustice or groundbreaking activism. Navigating the currents of British history, Adi unveils a panoramic perspective that clearly focuses on the vital contributions of African and Caribbean people. From the milestones of universal suffrage to our triumphs over fascism and the birth of the NHS, their indelible mark is woven into the fabric of our greatest collective achievements. By embracing this inclusive narrative, we gain profound insights into our past and present, illuminating the richness of our shared journey. 📚 Visit our Gift Shop to purchase your copy in person or shop online https://buff.ly/3fqdy5t "A meticulously researched tour de force that charts black presence on the British Isles from Cheddar Man through the African Roman legions and Black Tudors and into the present day" - Kehinde Andrews, Guardian #BlackCulturalArchives #BookOfTheMonth #BlackAuthors #BlackWriters #Books #Bookstagram

A highlight on my book and the concept of polarized opinions coming from polarized institutions: the history of white supremacy is embedded in all our institutions. Buy the book here: https://a.co/d/2zzLZma
