Today is White Ribbon Day.
This year’s theme, “It Starts with Men,” is not just a campaign or a hashtag—it’s a movement that challenges us, especially men, to examine our attitudes, language, and behaviours and stand up against the injustices that women and girls face every day.
Why Focus on Men?
When it comes to addressing gender inequality and reducing violence, men have a vital role to play. As a Councillor, I see all over the country men who are often in influential positions where their voices can help shape workplace culture, community attitudes, and the behavior of their peers. While women have long championed gender equality, this movement needs men to advocate alongside them if we are to achieve lasting change.
The theme “It Starts with Men” emphasises that men must be active allies. It requires courage, accountability, and, at times, uncomfortable conversations. Men have the opportunity to be role models in their workplaces and social circles, shaping attitudes that promote respect and equality.
