Long COVID claims tallied in California About 15% of COVID-19 claims with medical payments involved treatment for long COVID symptoms, the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California reported. More than one in seven COVID-19 claims filed between April 2020 and July 2021 also included treatment for long COVID over a 30-month, post-acute care period. The WCIRB also said 5% of all COVID-19 claims filed during that period, including indemnity-only claims, were estimated to involve long COVID. About 40% of COVID-19 claims that required hospitalization involved long COVID. Those claims also involved higher indemnity and medical losses than other COVID-19 claims, mostly as a result of the higher share of permanent disability claims, the WCIRB said.

What happens when beneficiaries of life insurance policies are also persons of interest in criminal investigations? Our latest insurance article explores how insurers need to consider the impact of South Africa’s crime rates on risk assessment and policy wording to safeguard against paying out in cases where there is a suspicion of foul play against a claimant.
#CDHAlert | In today's alert, Roy Barendse and Divina Naidoo discuss dying for a cash in: Life insurance claims amid criminal investigations. In Ncube v Liberty Group Limited [2024] ZAGPJHC 298, the High Court, Gauteng Division addressed a complex issue involving a life insurance claim and ongoing criminal investigation. The policyholder was a person of interest in a criminal investigation into the murder of the life insured. However, the insurer’s policy did not specifically include that the policyholder being a person of interest was a valid reason for it to delay paying out. The court found Liberty’s conduct vexatious, dismissed its application for a stay, ordered payment of the claim with interest, and awarded costs against Liberty. This case highlights the importance of clear policy wording and the need for insurers to act swiftly and fairly in processing claims, even amid ongoing investigations. It’s crucial to know that if a company fails to comply with the award within the stipulated 30 days, it is liable to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000 per day. Therefore, if you encounter such issues, be sure to write to your insurer and ask the penalty! #policyholder #insurance #health #ombudsman #claimrejection #misselling #fraud #polifyx

As reported, * Centrelink (Services Australia) agrees to process claims within "the agreed timeliness standard", but well over 75 per cent of some types of claim fall outside this period, according to data from #ServicesAustralia tabled at Senate estimates this week. * #ServicesAustralia has not given a further explanation of exactly what the agreed timeliness standard is, although data tabled at Senate estimates showed that only 43 per cent of total claims were processed within the standards in the first four months of this year. * Looking over to the National Disability Insurance Agency and we also know from its reporting that only 1 of 10 Participant Service Guarantee measures met the legislated timeframes in the first three months of 2024 * As they say, compare the pair, same bureaucratic accountability, same #MinisterShorten, same failures to citizen outcomes #TruthtoPower Marie J.
