OUR INDUSTRY'S FUTURE: You've seen or heard me state that the future does indeed look bright for our industry. And I mean it. But... It has fine print. We must do something about where we are as an industry. Reputation, powers, workforce, and sustainability (of the industry not of how we build - but yes, that's important too) being a few examples. So far, the #constructionindustry has become very comfortable and complacent. Which has us complicit in the mess we find ourselves in today. These mindsets maintains the status quo. The likes of which are broken and antiquated. To make things worse, we do so on the backs of our people. The same people we depend on daily to execute the ludicrous contract terms we agree to. Along with helping to dig us out of what seemingly is the repetitive cluster f**k we find ourselves in project after project. [that's more than the average by the way]. We are a glutton for punishment. We aren't looking at things in macro sense, let alone getting granular with our failures and weaknesses. We aren't even looking at this from a visionary standpoint. 10, 20 or 25 years into the future. And that's what we should be doing at this point. Our industry needs a compelling future. Something that packs a punch like a defibrillator. We're not flat lined. But, at this rate, we are going to get there quicker than we are capable to recuperate from. Many of us aren't thinking of it that way because we're so consumed with the day to day, that it's got blinders on us. Here it is on a bumper sticker: If the industry doesn't do something to right the ship now, we will work ourselves into an industry recession. And if we go, everything else goes with us. In case you haven't figured it our yet. Society lives and thrives in the physical infrastructure that we design and build. So don't we care more about us? (I'd like some answers on this please) We're currently unable to innovate because we're in a constant race to the bottom. The stark reality is that we’re not incentivizing innovation. Our most important innovation? Our people. For and through our people, what we once thought of as impossible will manifest and become reality. How do I know this? Because the intelligence we need to persevere and succeed resides in this industry. We just need to find ourselves. It's among the reasons why I founded the Constructors Guild™. RUBIK'S CUBE: Behind each problem lies another problem that must to be solved. And behind that lies yet another, and another. This cycle continues in perpetuity. To fix the #constructionindustry, we must first fix (in order): 1. Increase pride in our work 2. Invest in our people 3. Embrace a more holistic approach to our industry 4. Collaborate 5. Create community 6. Connect with others 7. Embrace vulnerability 8. Say no to requests and opportunities that don't align 9. Transfer knowledge 10. Set a new standard 11. Change mindset 12. Reclaim our powers (core) Sounds onerous when you step back and read them one by one. They're not. The truth is, most of these work congruently together. Meaning, by committing the time effort and money into one, you're actually helping the other. And it's not out of line to say that you may also be helping another further down the line. But, my guess is that that is not what worries you the most. It's uncertainty of it all that has you worried, and for some of you paralyzed at taking that first step.
