Over the weekend, our talented music therapy team attended the 49th AMTA National Music Therapy Conference at Western Sydney University, Parramatta. Lene, Christine, and Bronte presented insightful and well-received papers and research projects. Bronte also participated in a panel of music therapists in transdisciplinary teams, discussing collaboration and NDIS requirements. The conference provided an excellent opportunity for our team to network with other professionals in special education and autism. Thank you to this dedicated Giant Steps team for their expertise and commitment. Looking at the smiles and energy on the faces of these engaged residents, you would never guess this photo was taken in a memory care unit. The brain processes music differently than it does speech or motor movement by themselves. Music therapists are trained to utilize that unique processing, and to pair music with other activities (like movement or singing) to improve clinical outcomes. Are we playing drums in this photo? Absolutely! But look beyond that... we have sustained eye-contact, on-task engagement, orientation, socialization, and... joy! These are just some of the ways music therapy can be utilized with seniors or in memory care. Want to learn more about how music therapy can help your organization or loved one? The effectiveness of music interventions will vary across individuals; hence, it is important to observe the child’s preferences and needs. Even without engaging a music therapist, using music at home can be a rewarding way to support the development and wellbeing of children with ASD. It is also a great way to build a relationship with the child.

𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚? Music therapy sounds really complicated, but all it means is using and choosing music that helps your elderly family members to express themselves and enjoy their life. There are various ways to use music to enhance your elderly family member’s quality of life, including: 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 Even if your elderly family member can't communicate with you like she used to, music can bridge that gap. Songs that are familiar and dear to her are tied to memories. These memories might be ones she's shared with you in the past or they could be new to you, but they can help her feel connected and forget those moments of disconnection. #Dementia Care #Seniorare #homehelpersbradenton

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝘅𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆, 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺? 🎼 Our latest podcast episode explores the healing power of music with expert Graeme Sacks. Don't miss this eye-opening conversation! 👉 https://lnkd.in/dPXHkdt4 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 🎵 Music therapy is beneficial for people of all ages, from premature babies to elderly individuals with dementia. It can help children and teenagers express themselves, build self-esteem, and navigate complex emotions. 🎵 No musical experience or ability is required for music therapy. The focus is on expression and creating a safe space for individuals to explore their emotions through music, rather than on musical performance or skill. 🎵 Singing and participating in group musical activities can have significant positive effects on well-being. Parents and educators should encourage children to engage with music freely, without judgment or pressure to perform at a certain level. So, with or without music therapy - may this be your reminder to turn the music up, create a new playlist, or make singing in the shower mandatory! #ParentingTips #FutureSmartParent #MusicTherapy

🎉Planning to groove at concerts this summer? 🎶We're thrilled to hear that many of our patients are gearing up for some live music! 🎤But before you hit those concert venues, let's talk about your hearing health. 🔊Generally speaking, concerts can get pretty loud (for most music genres), often reaching decibel levels that could potentially harm your hearing. In these cases, it's more about hearing protection than amplification. That's where removing your hearing aids, and inserting ear plugs come into play! Ear plugs can help buffer the intensity of the sound while still allowing you to enjoy the music. 👂Don't worry, you won't miss out on the tunes – even with earplugs in, you'll still hear the music, especially if it's a rockin' show! Just remember to keep a safe distance from those towering speakers to safeguard your ears. 🎧Looking for ear plugs that are comfortable, custom-tailored, and even available with music-filtering options? Look no further! Reach out to us, and we'll hook you up with the perfect pair to enhance your concert experience. Let's make sure you're rocking out safely! 🤘 #ConcertSeason #HearingProtection #EarPlugs #SafeListening #premiere #speech #audiology #hearing #Collegeville #Brownstown #pediatric

Thank you for attending our workshop "Healing Journeys into Speech," led by @DrKatherineJones at #BAMT2024. Your participation was invaluable. We discussed Selective Mutism (SM), a serious anxiety disorder affecting some children as they start school, particularly among those with migrant backgrounds. The workshop aimed to equip Music Therapists with resources to address SM, emphasising the impact of Music Therapy alongside traditional treatments. We explored key features of SM, dispelled common myths, and considered the influences of racialisation, migration, and neurodiversity. Clinical case examples and experiential techniques provided practical support for clinicians. Part of our discussion focused on English as a second language. We examined how some children are taught to suppress their mother tongue to speak perfect English, often to better integrate and succeed in the UK. This suppression can lead to feelings of shame and identity conflicts. We highlighted the emotional and psychological impacts of these practices, emphasising the need to address these complex identity issues in therapeutic settings. Thank you again for your engagement and contributions to this important conversation.

Music Therapy can create transformational results for individuals of diverse ages and abilities. "Music is inherently accessible and inclusive, and a highly effective means of treating individuals experiencing crisis and trauma. Practice and research demonstrate the power of music therapy to help individuals develop coping strategies, understand and express feelings of anxiety and helplessness, support feelings of self-confidence and security, and provide a safe or neutral environment for relaxation."
