MARKETS UPDATE from Amvest Terraden #AmvestTerraden Volatility has clearly increased in the critical minerals sector. The market has experienced significant swings, buffeted by signs of partial recovery in China but also affected by signals from corporates of impending capital stress. When the leading lithium producer, despite its strong cash flow, opts for high-cost equity financing to replenish its reserves, eyebrows are raised, and questions abound about the inter-cyclical viability of the sector. The underlying commodities reflect few of those jumps, as the S&P GSCI Electric Vehicle Metals Index has been flat for the year to date. The Australian market, always more attuned to China’s industrial data, has a slight edge against the North American competitors. The MVIS Rare Earths/Strategic Metals Index remains 14% in the red since January 1.1 Stuart Macliver

An informative evening at the AusIMM Thought Leadership Series on Investing in a Sustainable Future. Critical minerals (those on the “official lists” and the other essential minerals required for the energy transition like copper and aluminium). A high quality panel with Lachy Haynes Karina Bader Ron Douglas Toby Whincup and James May. What out for the online release on 24th June. My summary with some additional insights: 📉 With Australia’s per capita GDP decreasing (Lachy’s share price for Australia), capitalising on the critical mineral opportunity is more important than ever if we can look beyond the “dig and ship” to a more holistic “mine to make” value chain view with partner countries. 🏃♀️Imporantly, we must invest heavily in the skills and capabilities for new and different minerals (this is not a repeat of the bulk commodities boom from 2004-2015). Many opportunities involve complex and speciality chemical products and processes. There is a large gap to close including with partner countries to early movers. 💰While capital and production tax credits are a start, more must be done to attract the required finance especially prior to FID including from banks (its easy and almost lazy to finance post FID with completed studies, permits, offtake agreements and a clear NPV model) ⏰ We must cut the lead time to develop new projects where the average is 17 years (for reference, OT Phase 1 was relatively fast taking 12 years from first discovery of Southwest Oyu in 2001 to first ore in 2013, however it will be ~24 years for full construction and ramp up of the Hugo North high grade underground). To close the coppper gap to 2040 to 40Mt p.a, we will need approximately 30 OTs. ⚠️ Commodity markets must mature with deeper and more sophisticated tools including for cobalt and lithium to support producers, customers and financiers needs #mining #criticalminerals #energytransition
