Don’t let myths cloud the truth about organ donation! The new #MythBusters series from BC Transplant is here to help clear the air. Doctors always prioritize saving your life, and organ donation is only considered after all life-saving efforts have been exhausted. Two doctors not involved in transplantation must declare death before organ donation can proceed. Let‘s spread the truth and encourage more people to register as donors. Register now at registeryourdecision.ca.

🌍 Celebrating Organ Donation and Transplantation Day! 🌱 Today, we honor the selfless act of organ donation, a gesture that gives the ultimate gift—life. 💚 Every day, thousands of lives are transformed through the generosity of donors who choose to share a part of themselves with those in need. By raising awareness about the importance of organ donation, we can help close the gap between the number of donors and the countless people waiting for transplants. If you haven’t already, consider registering as an organ donor—it’s a small step that could make a world of difference. 🫶 At New Organs, we are working tirelessly toward the future of xenotransplantation—pioneering research that may one day help bridge the critical organ shortage and offer new hope to those waiting for life-saving transplants. 🧬

What is the process for organ donation? More than 100,000 men, women, and children in the United States, including more than 10,000 in Texas, need an organ transplant to live. In 2023, more than 46,000 organ transplants were performed in the United States, more than in any previous year. Most people assume that they know all the facts about organ donations, but why not get the correct information? The Race for Every Child is tomorrow! We are walking in support of the Brain Tumor Trouncers team. Here's a message from BTT team lead Dr. Brian Rood: "Every dollar we raise goes directly to furthering childhood brain tumor research here at Children’s National. The money is not designated for a general fund where its impact would diffuse throughout the work of the hospital. This year, the funds we raise will support a clinical trial using a first-in-man approach developed here at Children's National. Briefly, we use a custom pipeline we developed to identify protein targets for the immune system that are unique to each individual child's tumor. We then train and expand the child's own immune cells to recognize those targets and infuse them back to kill the tumor cells. Providing unique therapeutic options where few exist requires a great deal of infrastructure that is not supported by traditional operations. We need your help to provide these innovative therapies." These are the folks who gave us 16 years with Joe that we didn't think we'd have. Donations will be accepted through 10/31.
Many of you know that our son, Joe, was a patient at Children's National Medical Center for many years. We continue to support CNMC in his memory, and the 2024 Race for Every Child is almost here! I'm getting a late start this year, but I'm still hoping to raise a significant amount for the Brain Tumor Trouncers! Will you donate today? Click here for my personal donation page.

***TODAY IS PKD DAY** On April 30, we celebrate and honor those who have impacted lives by donating blood for individuals with PKD. We want to express our deep gratitude for their contributions, highlighting the crucial role they play in improving quality of life. Let's come together to raise awareness and appreciation for their invaluable support. Individuals with Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency often rely on frequent blood transfusions, starting from infancy. April 30 marks the 120th day of the year, symbolizing the lifespan of a healthy red blood cell - 120 days. Additionally, the bone marrow produces a staggering 120 million red blood cells in just one minute. However, for those with PK Deficiency, red blood cells last only a fraction of that time, from a few days to 2-8 weeks. Are you curious about the vital impact of blood donation on the lives of those affected by Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKD)? Join us in watching Spikey's video to gain a deeper understanding of why blood donation is so crucial for individuals battling PKD. #PKDDay #PKDAwareness #Spikey
