Billy, what is your role when you invest in an insurance agency? My #1 goal is to increase revenue and profits. I am an investor in individual Insurance agencies. I am not an aggregator or cluster. Each agency has their own niche, carriers, and tech stack prior to me getting involved. Once I am involved, I bring time-tested best practice revenue focused processes, staff training, accountability, and technology use. If the culture is not built for revenue generation, I focus on changing the culture by training, reassigning, eliminating, or bringing on new team members, assesssing current and future carrier relationships, and making sure tech use fits within the best practice processes and the agency doesn't have tech just because it is a shiny object. Q. Why give up part ownership in the agency, couldn't they do all that themselves? A. If they could they would have already done it. They recognize you can build better, faster, and bigger with a team that has grown multiple agencies over the years. 80% of a $10 Million Revenue Agency is better than 100% of an agency stuck at 7 or 8 million in premium. (Which is the sweet spot for taking on an investor like me) #fixmyinsuranceagency

For many insurtechs, your own E&O = A Hot Mess. Here’s a blueprint to fix it: We see this same thing w regional and mutual insurers too. A quick story first… …recently a fast growing insurtech that focuses on “transportation,” reached out. They’d placed their P&C covers online at formation. “Just needed something in place.” The E&O program became an afterthought. The MGA business took off. Yet there were multiple problems with the program. Structural issues common when we review insurtech programs. Sure, it was working for cert issuance w vendors that require E&O. Yet, it was the coverage equivalent of a stinky slice of swiss cheese. Operationally, they were: ⋅ forming a captive to take more risk in their MGA, ⋅ receiving authority to handle claims, ⋅setting up their own premium finance company, ⋅and dealing with an early stage / disgruntled (well heeled) investor All, elevating their risk profile. + compounding the program’s deficiencies. The biggest E&O program challenges: ⋅ 85+ coverage issues ⋅ two different E&O lead carriers… (one covering the “tech,” exposures and the other the MGA) ⋅no bad faith cover For the vets, imagine the finger pointing during a claim??? We structured a deal: ⋅ with one lead carrier, ⋅ covering the tech, insurance ops and the finance co, ⋅ market leading terms and conditions, ⋅ aided their decisions on how much to buy w more robust peer data / benchmarking, ⋅used our bad faith model to help them understand the severity of a bad faith claim, ⋅ and wired them into the LION Specialty Experience - day to day service model! What was your 'one big thing' for 2023? For me, it was moving from being insurance broker myself & parlaying that experience into helping brokers evolve their business forward with tech solutions. While I ran a brokerage, every year I'd try to implement 1-2 things that would move the needle: - hit revenue milestone - make the sales process more efficient - increase closing % & renewals rates - evolve with the times by implementing new tech - find a way to automate simple, repetitive tasks - key hire Whatever it was, it was a proactive decision with an end in mind: 'here is where I want to be, what do I need to do to get there?' Often times that meant stepping out of my comfort zone & realizing that times are changing in the insurance & broking industry. That fact couldn't have been more evident by attending the Insurtech Insights event in Hong Kong this December.
