It is finally out, fully open access, in Policy Sciences, a paper I wrote with Benedetto Lepori, in which we propose a way to bridge a crucial gap between policy design and implementation. https://lnkd.in/egNGjvG2

This Week’s Top Report is… Public trust in science-for-policymaking: understanding and enhancing the role of science in public policy debate in the UK ▶ apo.org.au/node/326018 To build trust, research needs to be made “more accessible, transparent & familiar to everyone, instilling a sense of shared public ‘ownership’” The British Academy Considerations for public officials and policy advisors: 1. Seek to invoke science early on in the framing process, to influence the extent to which scientific findings are part of political debate and policy development. 2. Avoid an approach that simply ‘follows the science’. Make clear how scientific evidence has been integrated with a range of other considerations. 3. Promote transparency in how evidence is used. 4. Acknowledge uncertainty and ambiguity, and if evidence is used selectively, explain why. 5. Protect and sustain scientific integrity and independence in the way that science is marshalled in policymaking. Considerations for researchers and knowledge brokers: 6. Where research addresses contested policy issues, ensure sensitivity to different perspectives in communicating your findings. 7. Play an active role in helping frame policy issues early on in the debate, clarifying the role of science in understanding and addressing policy challenges Sharaiz Asin, Chizitera Pennington, Henry Richards. Professor of political science, Dept. of Comparative Politics, University of Bergen. PI on ERC StG CONSULTATIONEFFECTS.
Delighted to see a new article from my European Research Council (ERC) project CONSULTATIONEFFECTS out in the Journal of European Public Policy! We analyse the dimensionality of the policy space of the European Commission's online public consultations. Our findings underscore the challenges and opportunities of using public consultations as instruments of information gathering and preference aggregation, and the difficulty of identifying stable majority equilibrium in bureaucratic policymaking. https://lnkd.in/dzsJV_w4

What gets in the way of research and policy working together for evidence-informed decisions? In an op-ed in the Canberra Times, colleagues Ariadne Vromen and Dr Patrick Brownlee and I reflect on our research exploring knowledge brokering, which finds "that there is a problem, driven by a lack of trusting relationships that underpin genuine influence and facilitate research impact. To facilitate translation, transfer and mobilisation of research into policy, these intermediaries must help bridge a trust gap." https://lnkd.in/gR5hYRBJ Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/g-RtzM3s

just published in the issue no. 1/2024 of Policy Sciences the paper I wrote with Benedetto Lepori, in which we propose a way to bridge a crucial gap between policy design and implementation. We illustrate our framework through a contrastive case study of the introduction of performance-based funding in the higher education sector in four European countries (France, Italy, Norway, and the United Kingdom) https://lnkd.in/d2JYzkJy

How can policy process research help to address policy and policymaking problems? This special issue of the Journal of European Public Policy seeks to address that question by examining the theory and practice of policy analysis. The call for papers sought state of the art articles that conceptualise the politics of policy analysis, and empirical studies that use theoretical insights to analyse and address real world problems. Contributions could draw on mainstream policy theories to explain how policymaking works, and/ or critical approaches that identify and challenge inequalities of power.
