The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration announced - on Sept. 19 - that construction had begun on a project to increase the number of parking spaces for semi-trucks along Interstate 70 (I-70 South Mountain Welcome Center in Frederick County). The project will add a total of 25 parking spaces, with the construction expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The area has been chosen for this project because a 2020 study conducted by MDOT concluded that this site had the highest proportion of trucks parked more than eight hours in the state, and it is often at capacity. Everyone has peace on the road when everyone has a piece of the road. We can give everyone more options to get where they need to go quickly and safely by building bike infrastructure into our transportation improvements. Bike infrastructure relieves congestion with a completely connected, comfortable system of protected bike lanes that allows people on bikes to travel safely without inconveniencing drivers and walkers. It doesn't leave bike riders, motorists or pedestrians to navigate incomplete connections that force everyone into unsafe and confusing situations. Drivers, walkers and bikers can get where they are going with the greatest safety and the least amount of hassle because everyone's traffic flow needs are met through careful planning and smart construction.
