The Swiss luxury watchmaker, Rolex, has been hit with a $100 million penalty in France over its online sales constraints. The French antitrust body is targeting the prestigious Swiss brand for an unlawful ten-year suppression on vendors selling Rolex's high-end watches via the internet. The financial penalty was collectively given to Rolex France, Rolex Holding SA, the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, and Rolex SA by the French competition watchdog.
The ruling came in response to industry grievances and investigations conducted by the regulator. The French competition agency highlighted a striking discrepancy; while Rolex refrains from selling its esteemed timepieces online, its equally prominent rivals are capitalizing on the digital age by permitting the online sale of their luxury watches, albeit under certain stipulations. The regulator implies that achieving brand objectives doesn't necessarily have to limit competition, suggesting a more stylish and clever approach to manoeuvring the market.
