With the prevalence of Alzheimer's and other dementia-related disorders increasing due to an aging population, early diagnosis is crucial to delaying the onset of these devastating diseases. Yesterday I shared some updates from the Alzheimer's world as researchers found 5 distinct subtypes of the disease (link to post: https://lnkd.in/gMCqduBD). Although, it will be interesting to see if markers for these subtypes can be used in early diagnosis, they may have limited real world applications due to the invasiveness and costs involved for biomarker screening. Last week Darmiyan announced FDA approval of it's De Novo non-invasive clinical test, BrainSee. This innovative platform uses whole-brain image analysis and medical AI to generate an objective score that predicts the progression from amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) to Alzheimer's dementia. #multiplesclerosis (MS) is a debilitating #neurologicaldisorder that causes a wide range of symptoms, including muscle weakness and lack of coordination, and for which there is currently no cure. The disease damages the myelin sheath – the protective layer that surrounds the #nerves in the #brain and #spinalcord and helps transmit electrical impulses in the body. Because the damage is caused by chronic #autoimmune #inflammation, existing treatments have typically targeted the #immunesystem. But pre-clinical studies with a new #smallmolecule drug that targets the glutamate system rather than the immune system, have shown great promise for its #treatment, improving motor function and repairing damaged #myelin in two animal models. Preliminary efficacy and tolerability results were excellent, making it a good candidate for human #clinicaltrials and providing hope that a cure for MS may finally be found.

Do you know, Leqembi is priced at $26,500 per year. Although it has shown promise in slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease, but it can cause can cause side effects such as infusion-related reactions, decreased level of lymphocytes, and amyloid-related imaging abnormalities at the same time. Interested in knowing more, I am attaching the document here for you. While amyloid is considered important, the question of whether it is the sole cause of Alzheimer's Disease or if other approaches should be pursued continues to be a subject of discussion.
