From Volunteer to Professional: My Journey in Non-Profit Work Let's talk about how I've been able to apply my skills in the non-profit sector. Since 2017, I've been involved with various NGOs, starting as a volunteer even in my teenage years, until eventually leading my own projects. Back then, I never really thought about doing this work professionally; I just wanted to make a positive impact. At the beginning of this year, I was offered a role as a Communications Associate at Centre For Women's Health and Information (CEWHIN) a non-profit organization. Some might wonder why I took it, given my experience, but I was curious about the professional NGO space. I'm passionate about making a difference and contributing to societal growth, so I wanted to see how it's done on a professional level and how I could make a difference using my skills in my career capacity. And let me tell you, it's been an incredible experience! It's not easy, but it's incredibly fulfilling to make an impact and grow professionally at the same time. I've been learning new terms, expanding my knowledge, and reading as much as I can to effectively represent the organization. And guess what? This is where I transitioned into Brand Communications. Fundraisers - have you noticed that many people think major gifts are all glitz and glamor? But let me tell you how I got my REAL start in fundraising: One of my earliest jobs after university was working at the outbound call center at a national arts organization. We did everything from making fundraising calls to selling annual subscriptions… And it was one of THE most important experiences I’ve had in my 25 year fundraising career. Here are three crucial skills I developed in that first fundraising job that I still use to this day: 𝟭) 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗜 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆: there was no prospect research, no wealth screening - just me, my communication skills, and the person at the other end of the phone.  𝟮) 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿: one thing we didn’t have a lot of is time. This trained me to understand how to make a compelling case - and do it concisely. 𝟯) 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: hearing “no” is inevitable in our line of work - but it still stings! Learning how to bounce back from rejection is an invaluable skill (for work and life). Today’s competitive hiring market means that you likely have team members with tons of potential, and transferable skills like these - but less hands-on major gift experience. And you know with major donors, the stakes are too high to leave it to chance… That’s why I help your fundraising team build the skills, strategies and systems you need to raise more major gifts for your medium or large nonprofit. I just LOVE meeting awesome Fundraisers, I really do. I so enjoy chatting to a great Fundraiser and hearing all about who they are, why they do what they do, how they do it and what their career ambitions are in this space. So many years have past of me spending my days (literally all of my days!!) talking to Fundraisers, and it will never get old for me. Those conversations really inspire me and remind me on a daily basis of why I work in the sector I work in. Over the last few weeks, I have had the pleasure of meeting with so many great Fundraisers. There has definitely been a change in the market; while people have been unsure about the timing of moving jobs since 2020, we are absolutely seeing a move on this, and I am currently working with so many incredible Fundraisers who are looking for their next great opportunity. Last week alone, we were able to source an amazing shortlist for two tricky Fundraising roles from our Impact networks without the need to go to market, that is something that we are very happy about, as were our wonderful clients! I'm increasingly noticing charities re-advertising the exact same role just a couple of months after originally doing so. Whether this is because their preferred applicant has pulled out, or because they've been unable to identify any suitable candidates, they undoubtedly need to rethink the balance between what they're asking for and what they're offering. However, the re-advertised roles rarely demonstrate such reflection. Furthermore, with such charities rarely providing constructive feedback to rejected candidates, those who applied previously will undoubtedly struggle to understand why they missed out, and what they could have already started doing to address any perceived shortcomings. But they're often barred from re-applying anyway – whether explicitly (e.g. by a statement to that effect) or implicitly (e.g. by a careers portal that blocks what it considers to be a duplicate application). This clearly disadvantages early applicants when the charity ultimately feels compelled to hire someone from the second cohort. But it's also self-defeating for the charity when there could have been more suitable candidates in the first. Even when I've been shortlisted, I understand that I might still lose out to another candidate who's perceived to be a "better fit". But when I know that I've explicitly addressed every single point in the person specification, it's incredibly galling to simply see the role re-advertised with no explanation, and no opportunity to address what the charity may have perceived as my shortcomings. #CharityJobs #CharityRecruitment #Recruitment #Rejection
