If left unmitigated, nature risk could cost companies up to 26% of their net present value by 2030! I loved the “Navigating Nature Risks Across the C-Suite.” session at #GreenFin. The panel included Terryn Lawrence, Chief Sustainability Officer at Rabobank, Margaret O'Gorman, President & CEO at Wildlife Habitat Council, and Rayne van den Berg, Global Lead Partner at GIST Impact and Raviv Turner, Managing Partner at NatureX Studio, Nature Tech Collective The discussion focused on various nature-related risks, their significant impact on businesses, and how the C-Suite can prepare for regulatory developments, shifting consumer preferences, and manage nature and biodiversity risks. When I asked how banks design and implement tangible financial implications for sectors that harm nature more than others, Terryn provided an interesting answer. She explained that embedding nature risks into risk profiles is the easiest way to quantify them. However, data transparency remains a challenge for incentivizing better performers. So instead of standalone sustainable finance with separate structures and marketing plans, she advocates for finance and good business practices that must incorporate nature and biodiversity risks. Rayne shared an innovative method to incorporate nature into a balance sheet. And Raviv presented insightful case studies of systemic nature risks. For example, Pacific Gas and Electric Company's failure to properly maintain power lines led to devastating fires, resulting in 2019 bankruptcy filing due to wildfire liabilities. #GreenFin24
